Cool

Took an exit on the Tolworth roundabout, if anybody knows it, at 45mph!! Bloody hell!!! Some ****, suddenly braked infront while slowing down, and so ducked into the other lane, to my horror, was plunged infront of an articulated, so had to floor it, before I got crushed, and was therfore thrown into a roundabout at a stupid speed!

Took my exit, and whoah did the car handle it. Twisty or not, I love my car!

Must remember to kiss it on the way home! :O

very tight right hander, max 25mph on a very dark country lane... came flying around it, only to find a small micro-climate under a tree (quite damp!)

Anyway, the car got me out of the mess, although I did have a few nettles and weeds welded to the left fog lamp!

Just about my only brown trouser moment in the scoob!

On the flip side I'd have described your moment of wonder as....

Driving down the road today , tailgaiting the car in front coming up to the Tolworth roundabout. He brakes harder than I expected and not having left enough room to avoid an accident of my own making I decided to dive into an empty lane without checking to see that there was a bloody big lorry already there. Dreading an impact from said lorry, I floored it, managed to somehow get the car off the roundabout at some ridiculous speed, and pissed off into the distance, leaving everyone behind marvelling at my poor driving, thinking what t*ts those boy racer Impreza drivers are...........

On the other hand I would describe it as:

I was driving my car, made a mistake, the car, due to its excellent handling got me out of trouble.

Get a grip man.

What's it like being perfect.

Has no one on the board ever made a mistake?
I can understand ripping people for post like

"hey, I can take a roundabout at 45"
or
"Got my Scoob up to 140 on a 'private road'"

Seemed like the guy made a genuine mistake to me and was impressed his car helped him out of it.

It does seem to me that a lot of people on here have more faith in their car's ability than their own. I've heard stuff like "the AWD saved the day" etc and I find it a little scary to be honest! I drive a Fiesta and have made mistakes in it, had moments etc but you won't hear me saying " the front wheel drive saved the day".

If a Cossie owner was to come on here and say the same, he'd be the worlds biggest w*nker and nobody would stick up for him!

I'm not having a dig at anyone in particular in fact I'm glad you all enjoy your cars, afterall, that's what this site is about

XT's FINAL THOUGHT
I JUST WANT TO SAY SOMETHING, RAKS HAD THE CAR FOR ONLY 3-4 WEEKS, SO HE DOESN'T REALLY KNOW WHAT THIS CAR IS ABLE TO DO WITH A LITTLE HELP FROM THE DRIVER, WHY DON'T YOU LET HIM ENJOY IT. SO WHAT IF HE DID A MISTAKE? ITS HIS PROBLEM. HE DIDN'T HIT ANYONE. HE WASN'T DRIVIN YOUR CARS(THANK GOD!! ). I BET ALMOST EVERYONE WAS LIKE THIS WHEN HE GOT HIS SCOOBY. CHILL OUT, THIS IS WHAT THE BBS IS ALL ABOUT!!! CHILLING OUT WITH GUYS WHO LOVE PERFORMANCE MOTORING.

hail-hails final though (go jerry )

I drive a Fiesta and have made mistakes in it, had moments etc but you won't hear me saying " the front wheel drive saved the day".
I don't get this point Bob, I appreciate we all make mistakes in cars. You wouldn't say "front wheel drive saved the day" if it didn't.
I still think it's reasonable to say "the AWD drive saved the day" if it did. i.e. if i was driving a car that did not have such good handling I would have been in **** street. Had Raks done the same in Fiesta it's fair to say that all may not have ended up quite as rosy.
I agree people get a new scoob and think it will do all the driving for you, and I also know through harsh experience that this is not the case. I don't think Raks was bragging about his near miss, only sharing an experience with the community.

Raks, enjoy your Scooby, you won't get a better car for the money.

Anyway, off for a pint now, take it easy out there folks.

P.s. of course all Cossie drivers are w@nkers

Just to clear one point up, I wasn't referring to Raks, it was more a general observation, I should of made that more clear.

It was more that by someone saying AWD saved the day comes accross, to me anyway, that they were out of control! It doesn't appear to me that Raks was out of control, more impressed by his cars handling, which is a good thing!

RE what would of happened in a Fiesta, who knows! It's impossible to say without recreating the scene exactly, I know I'm not up for it! I know I can takes "some" roundabouts at more than 45mph though but then my car's not standard and I've had it 4 years!

Bob, not trying to upset anyone!

Mistakes are easy to make in the first few weeks of owning a scoob for the first time.

I had mine for about a week keeping below 3500 RPM so progress was painfully slow. Where was the 5.9 secs to 60 Top Gear.??

I stopped at a roundabout and thought I could get across but looked right and saw a car on the roundabout nearer than I thought. I was in 1st and panicked (ish) and floored the throttle. The bloody thing took off like ...well something manic. I just turned the wheel left and rght and left again almost with my eyes closed and it actually went round the roundabout !!

I never want to do it again but I's nice to know it's there

Midlife....

My first experience of the scoobs wet weather ability was as a passenger in an import WRX (1996 vintage) with the usual jap aftermarket additions. My friend was in the process of running me back to work and I had assumed he new where he was going. He entered a mini roundabout intending to go straight on when he should have turned left. Realizing his mistake I pointed him in the direction we should have gone. I was still expecting him to go straight on but instead he threw the car to the right to go back round the roundabout. The level of grip was amazing , even with my seatbelt on I hit my head on the passenger window. I know the roundabout well and even my Integra a car renowned for it's handling wouldn't have changed direction as quickly or with as little fuss.
Not an amazing story I know but just an example of just how well they cope with poor weather conditions and bad directions from a passenger.

Been there done that, 1st week of scoob ownership saying to a mate these grip like monica lewinsky holding bills cigar. Dived too deep into a right hand bend which was sharper than I thought and nearly put it thru someones hedge. Managed to stop with no damge to the car or shrubbery

Raks I'll drop you a mail nearer the Surrey meet time so we can arrange a deffinate meet.

Fair points Bob

I'm glad the scoob has helped a few out of problems they did not mean to get into. Sadly to say this was not the case for me.
I had my first scoob STi Type RA for 9 days. Going over a roundabout, as I exited straight ahead, the road took a sharp left hand turn. I knew the road and had driven the corner many times at the same speed in my Rover 214. Anyway, turns out the corner was wet (the rest of the roads around were dry), lost the scoob and skidded onto the opposite side of the road. Got it back under control before I ended up in the bushes. But it was too late. Hit a lady in a Corsa head on.
I was ok but she went to hospital in an ambulance, I can safley say this was the worst feeling I have ever had in my life. She was ok in the end but I'll never forget that experience.
I now drive an STi3 and the only fun I have in it is giving it a bit of welly on a straight road. It may corner like it's on rails but I'll never experience it again. I just will not go round a corner quickly after what happened.
I've had 10 months safe driving since and hope to never experience that feeling again.
So remember, they are good, but you ain't bullet proof.

Thumbs up

Well done Raks, and to all the do-gooders a la Reffro, why dont you go and buy a slower car seen as though you never ever reach higher speeds

I am a boy racer and proud of it I dont go tear arsing through villages, or past schools or in built up areas, but on dual carriageways, slip roads and roundabouts I do give it some stick.

Proud to admit it, and proud to say I have never hit another car, or caused anyone else to swerve around me in 12 years driving. But I still drive quickly, conditions permitting.

Far too much bollox talked on here about driving slowly

Christ!

Like no-one ever made a mistake, has ever speeded for whatever reason or got out of a potentially dangerous situation.

Sometimes it happens and sometimes people post on here about it just to come across the holier than thou attitude of some people.

Occaiasionally I like to find myself an empty bit of twisty road on a good day and rag my car down it to remind myself I am alive and do you know what I actually enjoy it.

I merrily break the speed limit when I'm out of town on national speed limit roads, in fact its is very unusual to find me driving below the speed limit except in built-up areas, villages etc etc. As my friends will frequently testify to me, usually by gripping the edges of the seat and asking me to slow down.

The reason why I wrote what I did, is to put the other point of view on this incident. Being honest do you think that poeple in the other vehicles who saw this were impressed with the car's ability to get Rak out of trouble, or sat there thinking that it shouldn't have happened in the first place.

I am prone to lapses in concentration only this morning in a world of my own I failed to notice that a car 4 in front of mine was going to turn right, and had to slap on the anchors. My point being is that I left enough room to compensate for my own inability. To trust implicitly in your car's ability to get you out of what comes your way is dangerous. I'm happy that in this case Rak and his car are OK. But this should be used to remind us we are not infallable, aswell as a celebration of the car's undoubted agility.

Nahh... Cars are my thing.

I did once meet a Bus spotter, now there is a strange breed. As for Train spotters the only one's I see are those that I scare witless, as I jump my car over the humpback bridge they like to congregate near.

After having owned a tuned Fiat Uno Turbo (180bhp, fwd and loads of torque steer) an E36 BMW 325i for 5 years (197bhp rwd) as well as drvien loads of other cars along the way I can safely say that my current car, Subaru Type R is the best handling car I have driven. It is the first 4WD car I have had.

I will never go back to driving a FWD car again. The Uno was understeer city in the corners and torque steer on the straights i.e crap.

The Beemer was a bit for fun especially as it had sorted suspension (Eibach springs) and a lot more controlable and fun then a FWD car but in poor conditons (which let's face it is most of the time in this country) the car was a pig to drive. Even though I had the car for 5 years so got very used to it's **** out antics and actually learnt to handle the RWD quite well, the car still gave me one too many brown trouser moments when I wasn't expecting it even at quite low speeds.

I have only had the Scooby for a few months but can safely say the balance of the chassis and the traction provided by the 4WD system especially in wet weather makes it the best handling car I have driven so far and it is already far more confidence inspiring than the all the other cars I have driven so far. All IMHO of course

Drive as conditions permit, that means...

- don't do anything stupid in a built up area
- don't be an ****
- make sure that you have proper visibility if you are taking the car on the limit (and this includes country lane/twisty corners)
- don't be an ****
- be aware of the speed limit, even if you are ignoring it...
- don't be an ****

We all make mistakes and thats OK as long as you learn from them. Stop having ago at Raks sounds like an honest mistake by someone exploring the handling. My reading of it is that he exited at 45mph not started at that speed.

Well,

I've taken a nice little wander through all the opinions that people have put down regarding what I wrote, and also the little statements made which was more about the car.

I will agree that this forum is for the love of the Subaru, and not for us all to take digs at one another, regardless of how/what we drive.

I admit my mistakes for the way I HAD to drive, but my car brought me out of it, when I took that corner. I shall never forget that. Let's all just learn from one anothers comments, rather than take offense to them, or make offense to them.

All IMHO though

Oh, Jay, still at KU, final year
