Don't they're illegal

From the DVLA website :-

http://www.dvla.gov.uk/faq/faqveh.htm#Reg_no_26

Are stick-on number plates legal?

No, number plates must meet the British Standard requirements and we are not aware of any self-adhesive number plates that are able to meet these requirements.

As are Honeycomb backgrounds

They are only illegal for "51" reg cars and later, cars previously fitted with number plates not meeting the standard are not required to change them as long as the plate is of the right size, using a clear font with correctly sized letters and is reflective.

Rules were made to be bent

If you want any 'old' style plates, stick-on, magnetic or standard then drop me an e-mail and I'll send you some details. Regplates@aol.co.uk

Ken & co

Seems to be a change in the law recently, with regard to fixed fines for wrong or illegal number plates. One of the local gang was stopped for his small front plate, (not unlike the one I used to have, with the smaller motor bike numbers) and he received a fixed fine of £30. When he hands in his documents he also has to hand in the old "illegal" number plate too and sign a indemnity form to this effect.

A couple of months ago I was pulled by a nice young lady in a uniform (I wish) and she intended to give me a ticket for my little front plate. This was before the fixed fine and was the type where I would have to go to an MOT station etc, but I managed to persuade her that I would go home and change it right away. And then meet her at the police station just up the road in 15 minutes, when she was due to knock off shift. I dully did…and she even declined the lift home in a nice shinny new Sti 7! (female dog!)

So KP & co...if I still had a small plate right now, my advice would be save yourself £30...and get it changed.

I’m sure Brian S will agree!

I'm not entirely sure they are illegal. I spoke to the DVLA and the BSI about this. They couldn't tell me any specific rule that stick-on numbers necessarily failed to meet. From the conversation with the British Standards guy, his main concerns were the font size, spacing and the reflectivity of the plate. His suggestion is to go read up on British Standard BS AU 145d, which is the full documented definition of number plates. That's only found in reference libraries (nearest was Woking, I think ....) or the BSI will sell one for about £60. So, they may still be OK.

Fatman - someone did list the dvla URL which specifies the requirement of plates not being stuck on. However it seems to be a grey area as most garages supply plates like this and Halfords sell all the kit to do it yourself. I think the police etc are much more worried about the size and readability (is that even a word?) of your plate!

Simon.

Hmmm...From the DVLA web site posted by Ken;

Q; Are stick-on number plates legal?
A; No, number plates must meet the British Standard requirements and we are not aware of any self-adhesive number plates that are able to meet these requirements.

I have a Westy and it is on a Q plate and when I put it through it’s MOT recently, it was tested as a pre 73 car, regarding emissions, etc. At the time it was tested it had a plate mounted below the nose section, so I have since removed it and put a sticky one across the top of the nose section.

Question is does this mean that it is still illegal, if it’s a Q plate and treated as a pre 73 car?

If you noticed what Fatman is saying

He has spoken with DVLA on this.. this superceeds the website..

IMHO I think the DVLA's website is talking **** when they say they are illegal... no where in there info does it state it must be plastic and solid.. just that it must be this size, with this size lettering and this font and this spacing and reflective.. when you actually think that a stick on plate is the same as a plastic one only without the plastic..as it is just pressed onto the back of clear plastic with a press.
I think they are probably worried people will modify them and make there own spacing and cut letters up etc..
as long as it is mounted visably correct on the car I don't think they have a chance.. I will be fitting a stick on front soon and I risk 30quid on the fact that the Police cannot do me for it as long as I meet the regulations..

IMHO what is written on the website supercedes what someone is told over the phone (Im assuming this is what fatman means when he says he talked to the DVLA).

Im not saying I believe this to be gospel but its the most we have.

JGM,

That’s where I was coming from. Like you, I believe I now risk the £30 spot fine for the stick on plate and quoting all the info from this posting and phone calls to the DVLA will probably get us no where fast with the cops.

Really gets on my wick big time, this kind of $hit. I have 8 & 6 year old boys at home who where exposed to some teenage delinquent injecting himself with drugs at the local kiddies play park this summer holidays....and we are getting pulled by the local police (not traffic cops) in their fecking diesel astra’s over crap like this...What's that all about then?

Jools, where did you get the stick on plate for the westie? Was considering a stick on to get the plate down onto the bottom of the bumper rather than getting in the road of the radiator. Was it the Autoparts place in Inverurie?

PS - You don't have time to swap a downpipe by any chance

Iain,

You are right, Autoparts do them. You buy the letters and numbers separately and they’ll stick em on for you if you want to keep the spacing right, etc.

Downpipe...Who you been speaking too then? I’ll be home in the UK for the last two weeks in October and could surly help you out then. SG still has his one to do as well and Chuck and I intended doing it for him, as he never seems to bother. I actually am home next weekend, but we have Knockhill on the Saturday so can’t do much then.

What kind of down pipe do you have?

Ah, that would have been JohnS ages ago

Got SimonJ's old downpipe and have had for ages but as the car needed MOT'd I left it (was planning to MOT early but ended up not)so need to get it done now. It's a twin dump Falkland one (or Magnex or something?).

If you did have time to do it there'd be beers in it for you

No worries there Iain; There are two or three of us oot the road that have swapped them over several times. Hell, we even had three different types on one P1 in two days and I’ve had my old one on and off several times.

With mine being a MY94 (the red wagon) I thought the bolts might be an issue but I think they would have slackened them (or removed them) when they did the clutch about 20k miles ago so maybe not too bad a job?

Talking

Just to add a little bit more confusion to the number plate debate Yank imports are excempt from using the new 'standard' size font & are allowed to use the smaller bike size one, this was also going to be expanded to Jap imports- always useful to know when bamboozling coppers

As far as I am aware, these, "stick on" plates come under the "temporary fixing" banner so, yes, are not legal for normal road use. This relates to construction & use, so the boys in blue will no doubts have the final word, along with the the swopping of words and paperwork..
