I'm afraid that I can't be of much help as I got my Glo engined tamiya from Singapore.

However, I'd suggest that you do a search, as there was a similar thread a while ago, which mentioned a couple of suppliers recommended by serious R/C fans.

Anyone whos a remote expert - what should you look for when buying? - the sires mention upgrading the car. What upgrades do you go for. I think id like an electric powered car as it seems to be less hastle and noiseless.

Just gone through this myself. Ended up buying a used Tamiya TA03F chassis with Evo5 bodyshell. Chuffed to bits with it. Beware of some of the ready to race models as you are limited with the upgrades - you'll soon want go-faster bits. Tamiya are a good starting place as they are pretty robust. HPI is also a good choice too.

I've been running RC cars for about a year now and here are a few points to bear in mind:

You can buy an Impreza body for just about any RC car out there. For realistic looks, Tamiya make the best body but it is really expensive. HPI also make great Impreza bodies and they are only about £17. You can generally mix and match chassis and bodies.

Electric cars are good for beginners but have short runtimes (4-8 mins) that means you have to spend lots of cash buying extra battery packs and quick chargers.

With a gas (IC) powered car you can just stop and refuel and away you go again.

For beginners, HPI make great IC cars that area easy and cheap to run. However, it can cost a lot of mony to upgrade them when you want to go faster.

I bought a Mugen for £325 which has all the upgrades as standard. It goes really well as it weighs just 1.5kg and has a 1.15HP engine!!!

 

Scoobynet shop has one for £70, check uptop.

i had electric tamiya r/c car and battery never last more than 12 minutes.
get a petrol one, they last alot longer

I need to dig my R/C car out.. haven't used it in a couple of years.

Has a race-spec Bergonzoni engine, drinking nitromethane like it's going out of fashion. DAMN is it loud + fast.

I have two petrol r/c cars, both of which are superb Once you've initially paid a little extra for them the maintenance costs are quite low afterwards. The only real costs are for the fuel (obviously!) and glow plugs.

Of course you have various different options as well, exhausts, wheels, suspension, etc. (sounds just like a Scooby really ), but this is normally when you get really serious and wish to race them.

I would however recommend getting an electronic cut off (around £15) that sits with the receiver. If you lose a signal from your controller for example, it cuts the power to the engine. Well worth it, as I smashed my car in to a kerb doing around 50mph and it bent the chassis, and broke a few other bits as well - final result - £60 worth of repairs

Also, there are so many makes out there - which one would be best for just a mess around on the weekends, no serious racing?

Fuel r/c cars come with different size engines e.g. 1.12, 1.15, 2, etc.. obviously the higher the size you go the quicker they become. Both of mine are a 2 - which basically means standard they can do around 40-50 mph.

As a beginner you should look at the pull start engines, because these are a bit cheaper, and easier to get working. My first petrol r/c was a Kyosho 1/8th scale, which cost me around £300 to begin with (before smash!), and came with fuel, kit, glow starter, transmitter/receiver, and batteries.

Depending on your pain threshold you can either buy the kits in 80-90% completion, or where you will be required to build near enough the complete car - I chose the kit option first time round, and believe me, I suffered

A few people who provide them in near completion form are Kyosho

 

These are not in the same league as the other RC Impreza's in previous posts, but

I could be your man....

I've got the latest spec HPI Impreza Super Nitro which I bought in April. I used to race these little fellas in the British Championships (before rallying came along) and can confirm that the HPI is a great car and the engine is very user friendly. I get all of my RC stuff from Apex Models. You will not find a better shop anywhere. What they dont know aint worth knowing. Although I've only used mine about 5 times (engine nicely run in) I'm happy to sell it on if you fancy it. I spent £450 on the car, fuel and a few odds and sods, and I can provide it with all the radio gear. I'm open to offers around £300 for the lot. Drop me a line. Cheers, Nick

 

got both myself and as said petrol are nice but can be a real pain to use/setup.
if anyone wants i can build an impreza(electric) on a 4wd chassis with all the bits, lsds, new motor,ballraced, ali shox etc and it'll blow most standard 10 or 12 petrol cars away easily and it'll be cheap.
i've got loads of bits and upgrade parts if anyone is after anything give me an mail and i'll try to sort u out
