Hi All

The amount of new development we're doing for scoobynet at present is a huge undertaking to say the least.

I just wanted to gauge how much of an issue it would be if we focussed only on IE, and only ensured that the site *operates* with netscape (less than 8% of the hits on scoobynet are with netscape).

By this I mean.... we will undertake to fix anything that stops the site from actually functioning, but there might be slight problems with layout issues (things not lining up, etc)

This would save us considerable time and allow us to get the new features out as soon as possible.

Could you post your thoughts, and also let me know if you use Netscape and would not want / be able to use IE for scoobynet?

Hi si,
I am on Netscape when I am at home and the only real problem I have is when I post replies they dont show up for a while. When other people post replies, they dont show up for a while either, no matter how many times I hit reload.
Apart from that, its pretty much faultless.
I only really use the BBS anyway, so as long as its legible and I can post a large amount of muppet traffic then I dont really mind.
As way of compensation, a bypass on flood control wouldn't go amiss though!

As long as you can read everything and have all the functionality available (may looking a tad screwy), that'd be good enough for me.

Had to move over to IE because Netscape would crash every so often. Don't like IE but happy to live with it.

If it means you can concentrate development then I would be happy to stay with IE, but would suggest that you start a different homepage when Netscape is detected that suggests people use IE instead.

The current software is completely compatable, and the problem you mention is cache issue either on your computer or at your ISP.

If refresh doesn't work, try CTRL-Refresh

This post and the question is relating to future developments rather than current ones.

Well I don't use IE mainly for two reasons:
- Security issues (My main fear is ActiveX but VBScript is almost as bad).
- It is not available for Linux

I find myself using Mozilla more and more since it does not have some of the Netscape 4.x annoying problems and works pretty OK for normal browsing (including scoobynet).
I don't think I would mind dropping Netscape from the "tested browsers" list as long as this does not mean that you will start using some obscure IE specific features, effectively locking out everyone who is using a non-IE browser.

One of the very ideas that made the Web and HTML so popular was that people could use any browser to view it, not just IE or Netscape or whatever.

We would not want to specifically develop for IE, the code we use would be very universal, but would only be fully tested on IE.

We would however make efforts to sort out any functionality issues first and then when / if time allows, sort out any cosmetic issues if possible.

I use IE 5.0 for macintosh and occasionaly use Netscape Communicator 4.76 for mac.

I only mention this as I'm guessing the majority of peeps are accessing via PC's rather than macs, so if you don't have a mac tester then let me know, I spend most of the day in IE anyway and most of that time is on some site about subaru's dunno what it's called though

 

Netscape is a knightmare.



Long live IE.

If its tables that ur using and work ok in IE, but fail in NS - then theres problems

NS is good for testing Table layouts.

If ur using Dynamic Positioning, then kiss good bye to NS.
Even IE and NS on a mac (positioning reference different than on a PC).

Also - could be that it not working in NS is because of BAD HTML size definitions - specifiying mixture of Percentages and specific heights / widths on Tables and TDs.

Or... in forms - no closing of form tags.

Point is NS is so strict - it helps to clean up ur code.

Perhaps aim to roll out IE version, then fix bugs to make it the same in NS.

You are right, most of the problems are using dynamic positioning, etc in tables.

It would mean restricting some of the layouts we are using (to make things faster and easier to use) dramatically.

In terms of BAD HTML.. ahem!

From my experience, the biggest problem you could get is that Netscape is a bit more "strict" in wanting closing statements (like /table and /html etc)...)

I would gladly do some debugging in NS (I normally use IE) to take out the biggest goofs

May take a day or 2, but after that all NS users should be able to fully enjoy the powers you are about to unleash (oh-err )

What I'm saying is: it may probably not be a real problem (a few niggles/days aside)

It's not so much that the problems *can't* be resolved (most of them can), it's just the time aspect.

I think you would be very surprised at how much there is to do.

i'm using netscape, mainly cos IE crashes and burns with DLL problems and when i try a re-install it keeps coming back saying it's already installed - hey ho.

not your problem, so I'm happy to live with whatever compromises are required to view scoobynet thru netscape
