I'll let you know in about a month - couldn't get any synth 10W40 (what it used to have) last week, so had to go for 5W40....

Aparently dealers have been instructed that 0W is too thin. No surprise there then. I have been using a Shell 5W 30 / 40?. Dealer will be using 5W Elf racing oil, which sounds ok.

BUT - Is 5 to thin, I have heard people say the engine sounds better on 10W.

Ok, I should know as I work with lube oils on a dily basis - so no bull**** please

I would most strongly recommend Motul 15/50W 300V Chrono - from experience on road and track it is easily the best oil that has gone in the car. I am sure there are others - but this is the best for me.

It does not evapourate and on track maintains superb pressure even when very hot.

motul still wont save you from a big end failure

I used redline and have to say the engine "felt" the sweetest with it, plus it was by far the prettiest colour!

yes trout, I have no doubt that redline will save everyone in the world from big end failure!

infact, with redline, det doesnt matter at all because the oil film is so tough you can simply run through det with no problems.

thats whay I ran 18 bar with 20:1 compression in my petrol impreza.

It ran like this for 19 years even after all the oil had drained away.



you cant say anything on this board without some bloke naming himself after at least one fish having a go at you. jeez, what is the world coming to.

Bugger, going to have to use the Elf stuff. Even the owners book says 5W is too thin, and not for high speed use Dealer wont have it that its too thin, only that the Mobil 0W stuff shouldn't be used.

Where can I get Motul / Redline form then?

Demon Tweeks do Motul and Redline, Motul 300V Competition (15W50) is £32.84 for 4 litres and Redline (15W50) is £36.53 for a gallon (bout 3.79 litres?).

Can you tell i keep a copy of the catalogue at work .

Yep your right for a UK gallon but Demon Tweeks quote for a US gallon which is 3.6ish. Don't know why they're different tho?

I filled with expensive 15/50 last time and the big end still went

 

the redline oil comes in US gallon (3.785 litres)
redline recomend 10w30 for standard impreza turbo
or 10w40 for track use and if you are running more boost than standard
i was told the redline 15w50 is not suitable for the impreza's
ive started using redline 10w40 in my car

Just because I like MOTUL does not mean to say I wouldn't like Redline - anyway - MOTUL is quite red too - is this something to do with good oils?

STI VII manual says 5W-30 is best , they emphasise it for economy , am using Mobil 1 5W-40 . Only oil my dealer uses , they also use it in their rally cars , not one problem . Turbo spins up faster and motor is very smooth , no tappet noises , maybe MY99 is different . Personally I think Motul is best by far , smells like bubble gum . Friends have commented on Motul after changing from Mobil . When I was picking up racing fuel from the depot the other day the rep said that Castrol was tested best by BMW etc. Sorry no-one knows for sure but you through experience . Good luck anyway .

I honestly believe that the newer engines probably run better on it unless you are doing race/track stuff. Even then, you can get 5w-40 or 50 (or 55, or 60 these days).

We have a new STi 7 that runs beautifully on 5w-40 in our group. A member of the B4 group put the popular 15w-50 brew in his car and found the engine felt heavy and had some other issues with it - at first he thought he had an engine issue - but at the suggestion of members of the group and his garage he tossed and everything went back to normal. We also have an STi V4 member that used to run heavy stuff, but changed to 5w and found the engine responded better and got better mileage. Some of our group run heavier 10w-50 in summer, I personally prefer 5w-55 though.

In short, I believe it may have to do with what your engine/driving circumstances/you like - trying a few and respecting the car is more protection than just oil can give.

All IMHO etc., etc.

I use 5-30 Shell Ultra in my Evo6, as recommended.The climate is alot hotter in Japan than here, and thats where the cars intended for too.

Alot of Evo6`s have problems with rattly tappets, mines now got 24k on the clock and still no noise, my m8`s with 7k is rattling already!

The way to get the higher figures (say 5 - 60)is to add more addatives, which isnt always the best thing to do!

Roger that Trout , They done over 20 000km's with that oil (Mobil 1 5W-40) and thats why I let go of the Motul idea .

So 5 is probably ok. I drive the car very hard, but never near redline, on a daily basis...

Maybe to 10 would be a halfway measure to relieve my paranoia!
