Octane Boosters
There's proof that lead compounds damage cats. And there's proof that some octane boosters contain lead.
Look at the packet, it ought to say whether its got lead in it or not somewhere.
Alternatively, take the cats off. more power! more noise!

Steve, octane boosters work well. You can feel and measure performance gains.
Most people use Millers Octane Plus, which takes SUL up to 99 RON. It does absolutely no damge to cats or any sensors. I've been running it continuously for the last 10k. ScoobyMania do it for £2.60 a bottle (does 50 litres). Try

Hi steve
Octane boosters are a very confusing area just now. But I have tried all the 3 popular brands, proboost, millers and NF black formula. My car is a MY99 with a vf23 and link ecu. One of the benefits of running an after market ecu is the ability to change the ignition advance settings. so here is my own experience
Proboost
Diluted as per the instructions to give the strongest concentration which I think equates to 1.8l for the 60l Subaru tank. Gave no significant performance gain. Could not increase the ignition advance. if really took the octane to 99ron I should have been able to run more advance. But I used it to all the track days as there was not that many more options available.
Millers
With on bottle of millers nothing happened but if felt slightly better than proboost ( but this could have been psychological though ). I have been told by a very respectable member of the Subaru community to try 2 bottles so I did. And it did make the car feel lighter however I still could not run any more ignition advance.
NF black formula
As soon as put that stuff in the car, the engine note changed totally or Alfa GTV kind of thing
. on track the car felt better, engine noises as a whole have reduced. So I tried with the advance and I managed to increase my ignition advance by 2 degree at least at full boost. This is really equates to 2 ron increase.
So to me the NF stuff is the best around but again it is the most expensive of the lot.
I think you will probably notice it even more on sti s as they are mapped for 100ron. Also a ecu reset after adding to the fuel will have to help even more as the ecu will go back to its old ( good fuel settings with loads of advance ).
This is my personal opinion obviously and probably more testing is needing done.

Hi All
I use Wynns octane boost, I emailed the manufacturer to get an accurate ron for 50 litres of UL they said 3 to 4. This makes it cheaper to use the octane booster rather than SUL! Both must be great, but I can't always get SUL when needed. The mods to my car give better performance with octane booster & UL than SUL only. I can run 0.25 bar more booste with UL & OB. Mods are Apexi Downpipe cats removed Scoobysport back box and Apexi Booste & Fuel computers. Apparently between 290 & 310 bhp not bad for a UK car!! I went Evo5&6 eating on the Network Q anyway.
