Question

well almost anyway...

Sat at traffic lights near a motorway junction in my WRX (minor mods c260bhp), I was next to a 5 door Sierra, no competition I thought and set off sensibly quickly but not madly! The sierra was almost keeping up, I thought I must not have been accelerating as fast as I thought. OK then at the next set of lights I did the start properly, 5k revs, good launch, fast on the gears, and the Sierra was abosuletly side by side. Hmm I was now turning right and he going straight so I spied the back of his car expecting it to be at least 2.9 4x4 and probably with a 'turbo technics' badge or something! But no the only thing on the back of the car was a 2.0GLSi badge. Right well I know my car is quick by normal car standards, so how could a seamingly normal car keep up (had no bodykit and only smallish alloys c15").
Is this a stealth performance car then or was the 2.0GLSi an amazing version of the sierra, that we should all swap our pride and joys for??? (yep thought so, I'll be chopping mine in next weekend!)

Jon (still very confused!)

Scoobies are not the only fast cars on the road. The car might have had a cosworth lump in it.

Has to be something fishy as your 0-60 should be around half of that of a stock 2.0L Sierra - I think they had 115bhp DOHC 8V - my Dad had a brown estate once and it was as slow as anything you could imagine.

EDIT: "Know your enemy":

It wasnt purple and they werent Escort Cossie softline 5 spokes were they? If it was, then I know the car you saw. The guy is a track day nutter and the car is a potent weapon. Saw her in the flesh at Trax last year. Flailing round the track keeping up with almost everything.
Believe it is no shame in being beaten by that car. I wouldn't even bother racing.

Never judge a book by its cover.
Last year on the way to the Revs top speed day in my Mini I caught up with a white Sierra on the A1. Everytime I went to go past he sped up!
Eventually I got well sick and just booted it. At 120 we came up behind an artic and he had to give way. When we got to Alconbury he was there in his '1.6' Sierra. Under the bonnet was a twin turbo V6. The only giveaway on the whole car was the larger tailpipe.

Dont mind when the competition is fair, I know someone who had a 300 bhp turbo technics sierra xr4*4, which was amazingly quick but with 17"s and big exhaust easy to spot. This car had a smallish exhaust and small wheels as well as good traction (damp road and it stayed with me???).

Seemed a bit odd to me, why spend loadsa dosh on a sierra to make it fast when it looked awful (though tidy). Anyway if I see it again, I will try harder (7k revs!).

There's a silver Sierra estate in Aberdeen, with all sort of Cosworth trickery under the bonnett - handle with caution

Car was a very dark colour or black. The wheels were 5 spokes, but not escort Cossie ones, smaller (14" or 15" Max). Was by J16 of the M4 (West Swindon). The car didn't beat me but I guess could have done as it just ran side by side with me from a reasonable fast start. But as described above this car was very stealthy. Owner was staring at my brakes whist stopped both times (EBC disks, look OK being gold)!

There's a WRX (GT Turbo) disguised as an RX (SPORT) green colour in Sydney without a loud exhaust, but has other performance goodies such as Unichip, more boost induction etc. You should see the look on the person's face who's car has been blown away by this thing. It hammers and it looks and sounds tame. No one thinks it's a Rex.

people modify there cars because it's a laugh. People fall for the " Oh... its just a crappy ford... I'll have that easy" ( Does raise the question why spend all that money on a scoob then race crappy ford's).

The laugh is seeing peoples reaction when they see the car move like they did not expect.

I had an debadged Astra sri with the old 1989 front end. However I had a Calibra Turbo engine in it. Lots of laughs in that car.

The reason why I spent the money is becuase I had the car for some time and wanted something different. I spent £4500 and got a well sorted very quick car.

All Hale Courtney Turbos

Cool

Hi Jon,

I had a 2.9 GLS 4X4 around 10 years ago. Looked exactly the same as a 2.0l, just had GLS badges on it. The car was very easy to launch the MT75 gear box and clutch perfectly matched to the engine, just red line and drop the clutch for a perfect launch. I always tell the story of a tussle with a 2WD Sierra Cosworth near the Queens Med in Notts, beat him from 4 sets of lights on the 5th set he just shrugged and smiled.

Around 2 years later I had a Xr4X4 2.9 260bhp turbo techinics and new someone with a 320bhp version, very quick machines but easy to spot with large exhausts, crap handling though.

Cheers
Lee

My brother runs a company called Alan Jeffery Engine Tunning, within the last six months he has bought up all the turbo upgrade equipment from Turbo Technics, his garage is full with about 3 old v6 sierras waiting for the turbo treatment. The usual conversion kicks up 350 BHP, but the biggest gain is the torque, more than a match for you if off your guard, however a 'banzi' foot on the floor should get you a head cause sierras are just to heavy! These things blast Cossies away!
