Question

True or False

Are there any gantry mounted speed cameras on the M25.

Steve Wright this afternoon was suggesting there are....I'm sure there were some earlier threads on the subject saying these were just traffic flow cameras.....

Between M4 & A3 to back-up variable speed limits in that stretch.

Traffic flow cameras are facing towards you. Speedy ones on that stretch look at you from behind...

There are a lot of gantry mounted cameras in the "variable parking" zone of the M25. Interestingly, there appears to be one per lane, which means that they're not being used according to the Home Office Type Approval (interference between eachother could render any reading inacurate).

Cheers,

Pat.

Thumbs down

There are also a handfull of the new "AV-VEL" average speed cameras that are forward facing but these can be tricky to spot in the gantrys...so watchout

There are no such things as speed cameras in the UK. This I can tell you fromm 4K miles in the last 3 weeks.

All you have to do is stick to the B and white roads

The speed cameras are indeed active. When the variable speed limit shows, that is the speed they are set at. When the variable speed limit is NOT showing then they are passive; HOWEVER they will still take your picture if you exceed 100 mph. They have a narrow lens which is focussed onto their individual lanes so there is no interference between cameras side by side. If you straddle the white line only half of your number plate will be photo`d. If you also look carefully, you can see when you approach the gantry which ones have cameras mounted as the top of the box is visible.

hope this helps

KRIS.......can I ask where you obtained your information from, as you seem to know alot about them.

I find at 85mph you don't get zapped whether or not the speed limits are in force.

Steve - you will if the limit is set at 40....

I think it may be95, not 100 - I wouldnt take the risk if I were you

The limit is automated by traffic density - therefore, 2 v closs lorries in the middle of the night can actually trigger the limit. However, a new court ruling (or rather a specific case) has determined that if you get flashed whilst on an empty road due to the limit being set flasely you wont be done. Allegedly...

Don't the gantries with cams on have an antenna on the left hand end?

Could have changed since I was on 25 though.

Cheers,
Chris.
