I've got a standard UK MY99 - wot's this boost lark all about then ?

I take it I need a boost guage or turbo timer to measure the boost ? Wot is it likely to be on a standard car ? Wot is the advantage of running higher boost ? Any disadvantages ?

Boost is what the turbo does = fun and fast.

Std car should be 13.7 PSI for a 1999/2000 car.

Increasing the boost by 1 PSI yields about 8 lbft of torque typically (rule of thumb lots of exceptions apply).

If you go too far your engine blows up.

Too far on the standard turbo is about 20 PSI IMHO. Most people would run 17.5 PSI max and enjoy long term reliability.

So how would yer increase boost ? Would exhaust/air filter increase boost and if so, how exactly ?

Seem to remember mention of boost controllers - presumably lets you increase boost on the fly for short bursts ? How do they work ?

Lots of questions.

An exhaust will make little difference to your boost.

The options are a manual or electronic boost controller or an ECU remap. The manual boost controllers will let you run typically about 16.5 PSI and are inexpensive. The electronic controllers are similar price to an ECU remap, which would also let you adjust fuelling and timing as well.

If you just want to have a little play with the boost, raising it a psi or 2, try one of the £35 dawes devices

They are easy to fit, but visit this thread first
