Question

The DVLA have won a prize for not clear English.

I bought a number - the form says contact your 'local' License and Registration Office which can be found in the telephone book. It also in entirely unclear as in one bit it talks about it taking 2-3 weeks by post and in another bit you have to take your forms to the office

I have identified two offices - Wimbledon which has no address and a an IVR not a real person; and Portsmouth which has an address but the number has been changed and I can't get an answer!

So a couple of quick questions

1) How do you assign the number - do you have to attend in person or can you post it off?

2) In either case how do I identify or contact my 'local' office?

Thank you for any help than can be offered.

When I bought my car, I got the dealer to put a personalised plate on it. The plate was on retention, and they took the car to Reading to get the road tax, etc, changed over.

I know a few other people who went Reading to get their done as well.

Hope this helps

Wow, that was quick.

Just to confirm - it is going on an existing car that I already own, not a newly registered car

Will search out Reading tho'

Thanks,

Trout

When i had mine assigned I went down to the DVLA office in Brighton with MOT Tax V5 & retention cert and they did it all there and then (I think i had to wait for a new V5 though). I believe you can also do it by post if you wish.

Hope that helps!

Have always used the Reading Office, it is in Basingstoke Road, opposite Reg Vardey. Do not go between 1400 hours and 1500 hours as all the Dealers go then.

Cool

Yeah you can post it all...

You would have to ring for the transfer forms to be posted to you first...

Or you can go to the office and fill in the forms there and they do it there and then and post the new V5 to you later.

Forgot to mention, I bought my car second hand from a dealer!

Shouldn't be an issue!

Good luck
