Hi All,

As subject, first, can anybody point me to the 2001 results of the JD Power Survey ?

Second, anybody had/seen/driven/owned etc. a Volvo S40 T4. I need to know good/bad stuff as the missus might be getting one. Well, actually she wants an S or V40, but I'm pushing her towards turbo power

Cheers

Ian

Can't find anything on-line, so here's what was printed in Top Gear mag:

Volvo S40 - Overall 81

Gearbox ailments and imperfect cabin trim sour an otherwise largely trouble-free S40 existance. But customer car is exemplary, as is the well designed cabin's stereo and air-conditioning.

Volvo V40 - Overall 80

As bad as it gets for Volvo. The performance of the engine and troublesome gearbox fails to statisfy but there's little else to rattle owners' safety cages, bar occasionally rattly cabin trim.

HTH.

Chris.

I owned a V40 2.0T, the light turbo version. This is not a boxy car and not a bad car. The first years the S/V40 series had some troubles but they got sorted, the latest V40 my01 is, in my view, a fine alternative for a Beemer or Audi A4. Quality is the same, so is safety, it handles nice, economy is good, the two turbo engines deliver lots of power and here in Holland the V40 T4 costs the same as a BMW 318 Touring.

One thing though.. more than 200 hp and FWD... it's a fine car but there is an end to what you can do with a high powered FWD. The light turbo 2.0 is somewhat civilised in comparison, smooth, without any noticable turbo gap.

Excellent, thanks everyone, just the sort of info. I was after.

We are going to have a look at a couple of S40 SE T4's and also a few of the later 2.0 SE V40's.

Her primary concern is safety, hence the Volvo, but if it can be quick and practical as well, that would be a bonus.

Again, thanks guys.

Cheers

Ian

Forgot to mention, in 3 years of ownership the only costs were some new wiperblades. If safety is an issue, the 40-series is tested better than the bmw3, passat, audi A4 or saab9-3.

But hee, a testdrive will tell you far more.

Hi Ian

I ran a V40 T4 CD a couple of years ago and pound for pound it was excellent value for money but as a driver's car, definitely flawed dynamically. This may not be an issue depending on your wife's driving ability but I heard that the light pressure turbo (LPT) engined car was a more rounded package.

Not driven any new ones, but drove a couple of old models (440 and 340), get you where you are going..... bit cr@p though (for cr@p read boring and uninvolving )[/quote]

think you'll find it's just the way you drove them

I had an S40 T4 CD for a couple of years before I got my P1. It was a fabulous car and everyone who ever drove it was suitably impressed. It was comfortable, fast and what seemed like invisible to the Police.

I'd definately reccomend one.

Here's a piccy of mine;

Cheers
