Question

any reason why subaru ditched the water-air intercooler on the legacy in favour of the impreza's air-air intercooler?

i thought water had better cooling properties than air

The legacy chargecooler...I would say that it all boiled down to cost, as the impreza was being aimed at a bigger market. An intercooler is a lot cheaper than a chargecooler, pipes, coolant, pump, wiring, water radiator. I think the intercooler fitted to most imprezas ( the small angled one ) is crap. STI and later ones are better, but I suppose, still crap. Not saying the legacy chargecooler is brilliant either though, just that top mounts especially standard ones, are crap. I reckon a well sorted chargecooler system with the std legacy unit would be pretty good. Go for a better water pump, and much bigger, more efficient water radiator for it.
