I finally bought my first Subaru! It's a 2006 WRX STI D-Spec and despite now needing to re-mortgage to fund my fuel costs, I am loving every minute I get with it. I am fortunate to live in the Norfolk countryside and have many empty roads to get to know it.
I have two issues though.
The previous owner has fitted a louder exhaust and I want to switch back to the OEM or OEM-like. Since, it seems that Subaru is not making these anymore I am faced with choosing an aftermarket replacement,
Can anybody suggest a backbox I should fit?
I am seriously considering daily driving the car, but I want a slightly softer ride. I have watched a few Tein Advanced Z reviews that seems like what I want.
Can anybody vouch for a Tein or Ohlins spring and damper combination that will give me OEM handling but be able to absorb the bumps, especially at low speed, better than OEM ?
prodrive made by scorpion, milltek, genome not bad but to expensive this days
hks silent power- not sure possible to find it in 2.5" or jetex revolution
doubt low budget coilovers will retain oem feel etc
gt1's or ohlins road& track could do it better but still -gt's1 -not perfect on some poor roads.
did not try ohlins ,to expensive 4.5k for newages

The exhaust if you want to go quieter , just get a mid section silencer welded in , if there is one there already then get a second one welded in , a cheap option at any decent exhaust place , it would be around 30 per cent quieter , Tein basics are ok but not that adjustable but they are set up quite well , from memory there is no re bound adjustment but height adjustable , they used to be around 550£ but expect as every thing are more expensive , BC are decent too , can be run on a soft setting , the Bc will be firmer than oe , my Mrs has them on hers and is happy with the BC , coilovers are a big handing upgrade on oe , firmer yes , on a good quality road you won't notice just more obvious on poor quality roads 👍
The 3-4 inch tailpipe is a bit off putting. Maybe the product from the link is only suitable for EJ20? I didn't manage to find a HKS silent power for EJ25.
Is exhaust hardware downstream from the turbo interchangeable on 2006 STI (Japan) EJ20 vs (rest-of-world) EJ25?
After a bit more research it seems Tein Advance Z will lower the car too much at 27mm lower than standard at the highest settings - I'm not wanting to scrape the underside over local speed humps.
It does have height and a combined bump and rebound damping adjustment, so not ideal but maybe that's a good thing. (Don't want to get lost between setups.)
I could not find an Ohlins kit to exactly fit my car.
Does anybody have a link or know a specialist that could spec an Ohlins kit for my car?
I just want to smooth out the low speed bumps to deal with the broken surfaces on B roads at 40mph or less. At higher speeds the OEM setup is great!
I used to lurk here on ScoobyNet a long time ago (probably 20 years ago) and it's much quieter these days. Are there less Scooby owners or is everyone chatting on another site?
I am looking for local meets in East Anglia & Essex - Do meets still happen? There does not appear to be any being organized on Scoobynet.
Any recommended Subaru specialists near to me? (Norfolk/Suffolk ideally)
If it has nice tone- burble i would not touch exhaust at all
Some of the exhaust systems - milltek etc have different lenghts on sections like downpipe, centre pipe and back box. it's really difficult to advise if we do not know what You have fitted.
ask member 2pot about springs spec but it could be expensive as You could need new bump stops, struts etc
Congrats on your 2006 WRX STI D-Spec! For the exhaust, if you're looking for something closer to OEM but not Subaru-specific, the Perrin or Cobb Tuning options could be good alternatives for a more refined sound without being too loud. For suspension, both Tein and Ohlins offer excellent setups. Tein Flex Z coilovers might offer that balance of comfort and performance, while Ohlins would give you a more premium ride quality.
