Hi all,

Car: 2008 Impreza WRX STi

Issue #1: Setting off and turning from full lock to center causes the 'juddering', 'skipping' etc from the rear
Issue #2: Crawling round corners on near to full lock causes the front wheels to 'skip', 'hop'
Issue #3: Reversing on near to full lock causes the front wheels to 'skip', 'hop'

I am no expert but my assumption would be Gearbox/Diff/CV related.
I am wanting to replace all four CV axles. The very beginner question i'm here to ask, are the front and rear CV axles the same?

I've been able to find front axles for sale on websites such as:

However, i'm not able to find rears.

Thoughts?

 

I don't know but I've found AutoDoc very unreliable both in terms of correct part numbers and ability to forfill orders in UK.

 

Bog standard car? have you replaced the tranny fluid, to check for any signs of issues?
Sounds more like a diff issue than CV joints.

 

Thanks for the replies both, never used AutoDoc myself so that's very handy to know. I will look elsewhere for alternative options before committing to them.

The car does have quite a few mods. However, the drive train section to my knowledge is completely stock. I was going to replace gearbox and diff fluid when changing all CVs. Then proceed to cry if the issues still remain.

If I were to just replace the fluid would I be looking for excessive metal filings etc as a 'sign of issue'?

Yeah, any debris is a bad sign but the oil could be silver showing excess wear of something in there, certainly easier and cheaper than swapping drive shafts out imo.

 

out of interest do you have the DCCD set to "Auto" or have you put it into "Lock" by mistake??

DCCD has always been set to Auto, it's not something I fully understand so I made the executive decision to leave it alone.

 

The hatch gearbox sump plug is magnetic so you will be able to gauge the oil and box condition if it hasn't been changed recently. It will probably have a dusting or slight fur of metallic debris, but this is not unusual
