Take your fuel pump out of the fuel tank and replace the filter sitting on top of the pump simples

Is it a good idea to use the official fuel filter then bud ?

And do you really need to take the back seats out to change the fuel filter then ?

I was thinking that actually.

I was gonna add a new fuel pump and Harvey up pipe next year then go for a remap.

If it was to buy a walbro now I take it that I'd need a remap near enough straight away gambit ?

you dont need a remap for a new pump. just be aware you need a different pump size/fitment rather than those used in newage & classic

Ok that's cool. Got the impression that I did.

Definitely worth thinking about. I take it it's an easy swap from old to new ?

How do you get the back seats out bud ?

Couldnt comment as never used them before, only ever used swrd pump in hatch and newage, or dynapex in my old classic

Here's the part I've changed in the past working on all in tank filter and to be honest I couldn't careless but it's not happy hard job for a competent person

Unit comes out of tank

Filter split but no need as you'll receive full unit

HERE YOU GO NEW PART FULL UNIT

Sorry for trying to help defo last time I'll give any advice on here

Unfortunately Zany all the above is irrelevant as the Hatch onwards fuel pump /filter looks like this

Recently changed the fuel filter on my 2008 STI Hatch.

Unfortunately Zany has posted incorrect info btw.

Ok, I think Subaru consider the fuel filter a non serviceable item as it is integrated into the fuel pump housing Don has posted above. EDIT - Jusy checked, the service manual says Fuel Filter / External Type if fitted. Well, its not an external type in the engine bay so no, without changing the whole pump assembly I dont think Subaru change the intank filter. The whole fuel pump/filter assembly costs £££. However, you can buy ONE of the TWO filters for the housing genuine from Subaru...

1st Filter - http://www.importcarparts.co.uk/parts-info?id=10592
Subaru Part number (I think) - 42072AG140

The 2nd filter is not so easy but an exact replacement can be bought from...TOYOTA! The part number you need is 23217-50100. It is a sock type filter that attaches to the 'inlet' of the fuel pump where is sucks the fuel in. It is identical to the Subaru part. However, availability - on the internet at least - seems difficult. You could try buying from a Toyota dealer direct quoting the part number, search Google for a pic of what it looks like. My sock filter was black (not white and clean) and covered in small black flakes/bits. Im cant say if it was effecting fuel flow but it was filthy so got changed.

Once you have both filters, you need to remove the rear seat (very easy - just clips holding it in place I think) and gain access to the fuel tank through the hatch underneath. There is 3 hoses that attach to the assembly but be prepared for spilling fuel, it can be a very messy job. Once its out, you have to disassemble it to replace the filters.

Guide here - Heres one, its not the one I used but still helpful, I'll keep searching. http://www.iwsti.com/forums/diy-mods...i-wrx-lgt.html

Inside the housing is a pump that is the same design as the Walboro ones - like Gambit posted above - but for some reason Subaru decided to create the assembly you see above in the 2008+ scoobies. Its a fiddly job and just be careful when removing/installing the assembly not to bend or break the float arm as its quite fragile. Remember also, you have to disturb clips/o-rings etc to gain access into the filter housing, be really careful not to break anything as some parts are not replaceable without sourcing another assembly 2nd hand or brand new. You cannot buy some of the individual parts.

The exploded diagram above shows different parts and part numbers, Im pretty sure you cannot buy all of these parts by themselves, but I may be wrong. The whole assembly part number should be 42021FG040.

Good luck!

SO would it be a waste of time for me to change the fuel filter then ? In the manual it says to change it every 50,000 miles but if it's not worth it I won't bother

The service shedule states (as you mentioned before) "external type (if fitted)". It actually lists it at 60,000 not 50,000 miles

The hatch filter, is definitely not external and doesn't appear in the schedule.

Whether you change it or not depends upon the state/condition of the fuel in the tank as well as the state of the tank itself.

Here in the UK the fuel supply/storage network is pretty good.

If you are changing the pump (for one that's made for the job e.g.
DeatschWerks DW65c
) then it's a good time to change the filter out.

I was gonna change the fuel pump in the near future because I wanna add a couple of mods to bring it up to 280/90 if it was possible.

So may possibly wait then until I do that before I change the fuel filter. I've got a good friend who's a mechanic so he can do that anytime.

I changed my filters as a) had no idea what condition the filters were in and b) my car is almost at 60k so meets the services schedule. Having said that I didn't change the fuel pump which Subaru recommends at 60k as the pump/filter unit is all one piece and costs £££. I could of changed the pump but didn't bother.

If you're doing the pump, may as well do the filters at the same time.
