I have had my car for just over a year now so I thought I would sit down and work out just how much it has cost me to run over that year. Bear in mind I bought this car brand new so it has not needed to have any work done to it other than routine servicing.

1000 Mile service = £88 (service plus few bits)
7500 Mile Service = £98
15000 Mile Service = £305

Petrol (20MPG for 12,000 miles (Super Unleaded)) = £2213

Tyres (nearly bald so included them) = £500 a set
Insurance = £870

So for one year, excluding depreciation it has cost me £4074 to run it.....

I bought my car on a PCP so if I give it back after 3 years it will have cost me £5518 a year in payments (Including Interest)

This works out to a grand total of £9592 a year to run or 80 pence per mile (over 12,000 miles a year)

I really, really, really wish I had not just worked that out.......

I now take my car to Cheam Motors and I have to say they are absolutely excellent (Even get a 10% SIDC discount). Had new clutch and alarm from them under warranty and every time I have been they have given me a courtesy car without me even having to ask for it.

I used to go to Bell & Colvill except they used to treat me like the sort of thing you found on the bottom of your shoe. I didn't even want to mention the clutch to them as I would rather put up with the judder than let them do anything other than change the oil (And I think that might even be far too difficult for them).

Sounds expensive mate. Bought my BMW 330D Sport for 27K. Likely to keep 63% of value after 3 yrs according to dealer etc.

1st Service = Free
2nd Service @ 10,500 = 129 pounds
3rd Service @ 23,000 = 210 pounds

Avg. Mpg = 38.7 for 20,000 per annum = 1937.98 pounds

Payment of 502 per month ( work pays this in full, as I took cash rather than company car! )

Tyres at 800 pounds for a set!! 18" Wheels

insurance at 686 pounds

So there's a total of 3762.98 per annum for the fuel and servicing. And it's mine after 3 yrs.

Don't feel so hard done by man!! You're undoubtedly having a laugh in the car, so that's good enough, IMHO

Had the blackbeast a year now.

over that year, excluding it's initial cost It's cost, aprox 4200

petrol = 1600
new tyres = 500
insurance = 1100
service, cambelt, sparks, discs pads, etc = 1300

Probably other stuff that I've forgot as well.

in other words, not cheap! but then it's a performance car so who am I to complain,

oh, and that's not factoring the circa 2k for damage repairs either!

 

Spent 2k last month alone on upgrade parts.

Did the same when I bought it on new clutch and gearbox rebuild.

1k on stereo
1k on alarm plus tracker
1k on link plus related stuff

1200 on insurance

have suspension to come soon too.

then theres front mount intercooler
water injection
motec ecu (only costing upgrade cost hopefully)

followed by new engine, for safety.

Then theres petrol and depreciation, what are they?

 

Mine's on a company lease, so its £450 per month plus petrol.

15k miles @ 20 mpg = 750 gallons a year = £2,700 appx.

12 months @ 450 = £5,400

Or £8,100 per year

Company pays me £4,500 plus 10p per business mile, say 4000 miles, =£400

So net cost to me for a year is £3,200.

Not too bad a deal, really

Matt Oz - try getting a BMW dealer to offer more than 45% on their own PCP scheme - blood from a stone mate.

In response to the additional question - try owning an Sti - if you bought one retail a couple of years ago you may have paid between £33k (IV) to £27k (V) and all prices in between. You're looking at least 40% or more depreciation in the first two years, with higher interest costs due to more capital being used to buy it, and much higher insurance premiums.

80pence - a dream for an STi owner...

...oh and all that fiddling with tuning and ECUs etc

10p a mile!! get them to use upto date figures. IR now allow 25p per mile for upto 2000cc for business mileage.

I have a UK 99 impreza,a discovery and an A reg nova sr that the wife uses for work. I paid £100 pounds for the nova 13 months ago with 40000 on the clock .It now has 53000 and i worked out the other day the cost per mile was 14.5p providing the car is still worth what i paid for it!! As for the scoob i am too frightend to work it out.

So how much less do you think it would cost you to run a cr4p car? you are still going to get ripped off for servicing whichever car you buy new or nearly new, you will maybe save on fuel consumption , if you ran a Vauxhall Vectra(yawn, excuse me while I go to sleep ) doing 32mpg instead of a scooby doing 22 mpg over 12000 miles you would save £600- whooppee, much less than a pint of beer a day let alone 20 ****. My point is buying/running a new car is always going to cost lots of money it just so happens running a scooby may cost you a wee bit more than the average car - but lets face it that's why we drive what we drive isn't it?

I run my impreza as a company car.
I pay nothing for the upkeep. Free SO2's on demand!
I pay nothing for the fuel.
I pay nothing for the insurance.
I pay nothing for the servicing.
I pay nothing for depreciation.
I pay an aditional £1800 in tax by my reconing.

Not a bad deal really when you think about it.

My westie on the other hand!
£300 for insurance.
Zero depreciation.


If i used it purely on the road it would Cost
Few quid to service every 6 months.
Road tax costs.
do average 30MPG so pretty cheep to run.

Thing is i dont, i give it death on track. I dont want to think about the cost of that thanks!

True to an extent, but in 3 months and 7500 miles ownership of my 330d, I am already c£2500 better off than I would have been in my Impreza - almost £1000 in fuel saving alone

Moral: buy an Impreza for what it is, not for financial reasons

Gary - I work for a big 5 firm. They know the IR figures -lol. Stingy barstewards won't pay it though

Client gets charged 50p per mile, we get 12p (it went up recently).

Just to clarify things:

If you have a company car and provide your own petrol, the company can pay you what it likes for your business mileage (and won't pay you anything for your private mileage). So, if your company pays you 10p/mile and you average 20mpg, it's not encouraging you to use your company car on business.

If you use your own private car for business, the company can, again, pay you whatever it likes but you are entitled to claim back the difference between that and the IR's Authorised Mileage Rate - AMR - (which varies, depending on engine size and reduces after 4000 miles in the year 2001-02 and changes again in the year 2002-03) through your annual tax return. The AMR applies to both the Car Allowances Enhanced Reporting Scheme (CAERS) and the Fixed Profit Car Scheme (FPCS) depending on which your employer has adopted or agreed with the IR.
