Doing the belt on my blob wrx and having problems timing it all back up. I've got all the marks lined up and also the marks on the new belt all lined up perfect,but when the tensioner released and engine spun round to double check the passenger side always ends up out
Is itit possibly due to slack somewhere else in the belt before the tensioner? Im using vice grips on the passenger pulleys (softly incase they break) to lock them and I've tried moving a tooth out on purpose to compensate when tensioner released but still ends up the same?
Searching the net it seems to be kinda common,any tips please? Thanks.

Are you fitting the belt with the tensioner reset?

I was my understanding the enignehas to turn many many times for it all t re-align perfectly again...

I think you're right, takes a silly amount of revolutions before it all lines up again

 

Did mine last week, all lined up with one revolution i think.

I replaced new tensioner and pulleys and water pump. Had to use a small mirror to check they where all lined up.

 

I think it's the mark on the belt that doesn't line up after its turned. There was a thread not so long ago about it and a few had said it takes a load of turns before it lines up again.

 

Did my about 2 years ago on bug wrx. I replaced all pulleys, tensioner and water pomp too.
And I think that after one revolution all was line up.

 

That pic is after 1 full revolution of the cams (2 turns of the crank)

 

as mentioned its a daft amount before everything will all line up again, as long as all the pulley marks are in the correct positions you are fine, if they are out that is when you can get interference.

 

The pulley marks ain't in the correct place as per the pic.
I can have them all lined up perfect but as soon as I rotate the engine, the passenger side won't line up again? I know the marks on the belt won't line up again for so many rotations( same as a chain) but its the actual pulley marks on passenger side that always end up out

 

Put the original belt back on and still getting the same issue Starting to think its the tensioner, should have just got 1 as a kit. Looks way too close to the oil pump housing aswell??

 

If you move the crank mark to the right side of the timing mark, do all the other marks line up?

They do seem to be slightly off as standard if you perfectly line up the crank marks. But that does look more out than how they sit.

Hi, you don't have to go out a tooth to line it up. I start from drivers side pulling the slack out on the way round and over crank. Down over the passengers side and round the water pump. Put the bottom pulley on last, be careful using vice grips on the cam pulleys, I snapped the passengers side the first time I tried that method as they are very brittle.
I use only brand new tensioners as there will be no issues with wear, once everything is lined up and bottom pulley on and everything is ready to go pull the pin, you should be good to go! Turn the engine over a couple of times to let the tensioner take up all the slack and you should be lined up on the crank and both sides on pulleys.

Hope you get it sorted, remember the Passenger side Intake pulley can only be turned clockwise and the Exhaust pulley anti-clockwise or you can bend valves!
