Guys need your opinions please, looking for new tyres and been offered a set of 888's 265/35/18 at a good price, however my car sees mostly normal road use, it may get a little track time but not much.

What are your thoughts on these tires for fast road use?? I've heard there ****e for wet and damp roads.

Or can anyone recommend any good (not break the bank) tires.

Most of my experience is with Pirelli Pzero's as I used them on most of my RWD cars.

That's pretty wide! I will be trying Federal RS-Rs I think, I'm more interested in fast road then track but I will do a couple of track days at Knockhill if I feel like wrecking another engine ;-) I read they are a bit better in the wet then the likes of 888s, their tread pattern looks less extreme, but still a good bit more extreme then regular performance tyres. Car's been off the road for about a million years now so been a while since I looked at prices but they were pretty good I think (I was only looking at 17" though). I'll let you know what I think to them, should only be another 600 years until I get my car back X-( lol

 

888s are fine in anything except deep standing water. However given the description of your needs I believe most road tyres would be better suited than the 888 which will also wear much more quickly than most road-biased compounds (think <5k miles).

 

Thanks guys, I have just been reading up on Nangkang NS2-R tyres which are a bit cheaper but are getting some good feeback. found them on ebay set of 4 £290 sounds very cheap but looks to be good reviews so might give them a try

Federal RSR/Nankang NS2-R would be a great alternative.

Check out pneus tyres, tyre leader & oponeo - usually cheaper than ebay.

Try camskill also - they price match where they can too.

R888s are noisy as hell for road use.

 

You still need to get heat into RSRs to them to really work though.
As a road tyre I would go for Goodyear Eagle F1s as they are a great all rounder.
But do not take them near a track.

If you want to do a few track days but want something road legal for fun blasts in the dry and the car is not a daily driver and does not as a rule see all weathers. Then go for RSRs.

Do not get me wrong RSRs are not bad in the wet, But -
I have taken a 500hp impreza at put it on and over the limits in the wet on RSRs F1s 888s ect........And the RSRs break away sooner than the F1s on the road in the wet.

The F1 is a brilliant all rounder but master of nothing.

If you do alot of track work then two sets of wheels are really needed.
So In my instance....
I have my road set, to trundle about between sponsors and tracks and workshops that are also my back up track wheels and they have RSRs on.
Then I have a set of track wheels which will have 888s or slicks on.

As above really, I've got 2 sets of wheels, 1 set for the road with rsr's on and another for track with 888's on, Also got a new set of ns2r's to try when the rsr's are done and on the look out for another cheap set of 18x8 114.3 rims

 

2 sets of wheels are the best but i'd look at the Nankang NS2-R in the 180 'road' spec as they may be a decent enough jack of all trades for you with 1 set of wheels.

 

What size are you after?.

I will be after 265/35/18s or maybe even 275/40/18s for a squarer profile on a 9.5j rim

 

Why not try the Momo M3's. So cheap its criminal and plenty of great reports about them.

 

My car came with Michelin pilot super sport tyres, seem very good in the dry but not tested in the wet yet.

 

Got a set of these going on my other set of rims that are in the paint shop ! I know ditch is getting on quite well with his set !

 

If you can find Yoko AD08Rs in your size, that might be a good choice if you only have one set of wheels.
Bit pricey and wear ain't that great though.
But as you have already decided to drive a Subaru, neither of these factors should be of consequence ;-)

 

You not fitted yours yet then? I'm very pleased with them although I still don't know how they compare to other sticky rubber but I'm impressed with their dry grip, managed to get them to break away in the wet now on a greasy bit of road but I was really trying, 2nd gear 3k rpm and floor it, nice controllable slide with no snap and still wanted to go where I was pointing it without any drama.

 

Just collected the rims yesterday ditch with the tyres all fitted and balanced ! I'm at work this weekend but Monday off so will swap them over and see how they compare to the rsr,s I take off ! Ha

 

I would recommend the NS2Rs in 120 compound, or the Advans as metioned above!

 

That's going to be a proper test for them you've got me worried now

I'll be very interested to see what you think of them to give myself an idea where they sit alongside the seriously grippy stuff. I've started to get them to squeal a bit and lose traction on a big roundabout and a couple of bends, but for me they're grippy as hell compared to what I've had in the past, quite strange learning not to slow down quite so much for bends that I'm used to taking a fair bit slower.

As far as road driving goes I've pussied out with these tyres as the speeds are a bit silly, I'm yet to take them down may favorite coast road but I suspect I'll be wimping out there too, need to get them on track really as I'm just not comfortable pushing that hard/fast on the road.

 

I'll take the car out on Monday and scrub them in as loads of islands and quiet straight roads here in worcester ! To be fair I have really pushed these rsr,s and at £78 a corner are fantastic value ! Not expecting the Momos to have the same level of grip but I'll see ! Only one way to find out !

 

I have ran both R888 and D01J (old DZ03) semi-slicks on the road for daily use.

Im now running AD08R all round and they are fantastic. The AD08R is great and as a rule of thumb I will not run any less than them on the road now but the semi slicks did have better turn in, steering feel and the rear felt alot tighter on them.

The semi slicks only lasted me about 4/5k of daily driving. They are amazing on the road though, the grip levels you get once hot are bordering on stupid even when they are almost on the wear markers! They still work in the damp too, just stay away from huge puddles as you will very easily aquaplane!

Once the car is set up properly suspension wise and I start doing trackdays I will 100% be doing the same as Steve says and run 2 sets of wheels AD08/R888 combo.

 

Any news on the momo's maz?

 

So far so good ! Done 80 miles up and down the motorway to work but not really pushed them yet ! I'll give it another couple of days to work and try a bit harder on the weekend !

Doesn't look good, wouldn't want to take them on a long motorway run looking like that, seems like they have degraded, what's the date stamp on them?

 

Brought them last year from my tyres !! They have been good to be fair ! Have offered me a full refund now or replacement tyres , then collect and send them off to federal to check over but if deemed ok then I have to pay for the replacement tyres or give them the cash back ! A few people have the same issues and feedback seems to be is that it's ok , that happens ! Will have to see I guess ! I would rather they just collect and inspect but I have to choose either a full refund or replacement tyre until they make a decision !

 

With all 4 looking like that I'd go for the refund and just bank the cash until you hear the decision, personally I wouldn't want another set seeing splits in the tread like that, I've had a blow out once and wouldn't wish it on anyone, proper shat my ring and it was only the valve that let go, god knows what it's like when the whole tyre goes bang and shreds it's self.

I personally would go with R888,they're best tyres what we are tried and AD08R,they're have poorer grip than R888

Yes they're noisier,but still what they offer is grip and grip and agree about the Dunlop D01J,we are run them only for time being,but they're been better than R888

Anybody tried Yokohama ao48's? Very expensive but they look better than 888s. I currently run ado8's all round which have never done me wrong, but I think I may try ao48s next time as rumor has it they may not be road legal forever.

What we are tried A048's are better tyres than R888,they works straight away,not like with R888 when you need put bit more heat to them and then use them
