Default Temp gauge on max but scanner reads 90 degrees

Got a friend round today and im confused, he said he was driving on the motor way all was fine he then noticed his temp gauge rising very quickly. He said it went from normal position to max in 3-4 seconds. He stopped withing 30 seconds and let the car cool. Then checked coolant level all seemed fine and didnt smell hot or feel more than normal. We scanned it today and watched the temp gauge rise much quicker than normal but the scanner never exceeded 110 degrees each time the fan would kick in and come back to 90 degrees. Has anyone known the gauge to give a false reading? if so what was the cure?

Its a 1999 uk 2000 awd turbo

Temp sensor behind alt is only couple weeks old could it be a faulty one?

The fans on my car cut in at about 90-92 degrees. If yours aren,t cutting in till 110 degrees, I,d say there was something wrong with your temp sensor. Steve.
