"A cover for the back/behind the engine" - any guesses?
Dear all,
Chris (my blokie) just rang me after calling the body shop who said they'd have our car ready for tomorrow (well, acutally it was last friday, then tomorrow, now it turns out it's next friday)...anyway, they said it was going to the Subaru dealer who said they could fix it appart from "a cover for the back/behind the engine" which they didn't have "but don't worry because it runs fine without it".
Now, Chris isn't a pushy guy therefore didn't ask anymore questions...but I'm not happy to accept this - does anyone know what this is? Can my car fun fine without it? Surely it would be there for a purpose? (not just to look pretty?!) i.e. is it a cover for one of the belts and could therefore help prevent massive engine damage if the belt broke? Would you accept this or push it through? Fast Bloke and IanW have suggested this could be the heat sheild behind the turbo or sound profing (sp?!) Just thought I'd get as many suggestions as possible so when I ring them this afternoon I have a bit of a go at sounding knowledgeable...also, any idea why they would have to take this off - is it easy to loose?!
Sorry for such a long post but I'm gutted. It's my wedding in 9 days time and I did really want the car there (we've even got a model silver Scoob on the cake) I'd like as much info as possible to push this through. (they've got to reseat one of the valves as well - I just feel like I havn't got a clue what they're talking about!
) Anyone know how long this should take?
Thanks
Jen (who's now going for a short walk to calm down..)

If its round the back of the engine it wont be a belt cover as there are no belts back there ( AFAIK anyway ). Quite possibly the heatshield as others suggested.
If I was you I'd go to 'shatts and compare your engine bay to another car of the same year ( they must have a couple lying about down there ) and see for yourself exactly what is missing.
Maybe you can come to an agreement that they order the part, you have the car in the meantime ( provided its okay to drive etc ) and when the part comes in they fit it while you wait ? if its a cover it cant be hard to fit..

Sparks - thanks - I didn't think there was any belts round the back...but I'd rather make a muppet of myself on here to check rather than at the bodyshop

Thanks as well for the confirmation, I'll make sure they order the partas you say, seems to be the best compromise...
Thanks again!
Jen

Hi Jen,
Could be the engine under-tray..... this may extend to under the transmission so could be classed as behind the engine ??? Agree with the above : take the car when its ready and insist they order the part and fix it when its in stock. Get it in writting on you receipt as additional work required.
I will take a look tonight to see if any thing is obvious as mines a 98 too.
Good luck
Steve
