I used a relay and fitted better quality wire - I kept on of the OE connections to use as the switch feed on the relay but ran a fused power line direct from the battery
thanks for the replies all.. on inspecting the cables for the horns I can see what is meant by them being very thin. Kit came with a relay so I am going to wire that up.
Shouldn't need a wiring diagram but feel free to share.
Gone with 17 amp cable from halfords as this should be plenty. Also going with a 15 amp fuse to keep things nice and safe. Horns rated at 6 amps each so in theory all will be ok.

OK, three things:
17A cable is fine.
15A fuse is fine.
See if you can get hold of some solder connectors and nylon covers: http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/20-Pcs-Gol...item41967753a3 and http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/6-3mm-Non-...item27ff70afb6
Strip wire, place into connector and crimp to hold in place, then solder and slide nylon cover over.
The coloured crimp connectors are AWFUL unless you have the correct tool and even then, often suffer from corrosion.
Wiring:
Relay terminal 30: FROM battery via fuse.
Relay terminal 87: to horns, (either use a piggyback connector, or get a relay with TWo terminal 87's.)
Relay terminal 85: FROM old horn wiring,
Relay terminal 86: To a suitable earthing point, or battery -ve.
HTH.

Already started with the colour coded crimping tool. But left a tip of wire showing in the plugs so I can put a smidge of solder on there.
Plan to cover all connections with some insulation tape as found it more water tight than the push over spade sleeve things.
Wiring was what I thought but cheers for confirming, puts my mind at ease.
I shall get onto it tonight, I can then be an obnoxious Impreza driver

The covers aren't really there for watertight, splashproof maybe, but mostly for insulation.
And my insistence on soldering is because NO amount of water ingress will spoil a correctly soldered joint.

Well it is all installed and I am happy with the result. Wires nicely hidden and works a treat.
Next time a damn school run mum cuts me up on my way to work I will give it a blast.
For the record I soldered every connection and insulated with tape. Belts and braces and all that.
