Noticed the past few days ive been losing a little coolant and I can smell it burning too. Checked today after getting home and I noticed its sprayed everywhere?? Any ideas where to start looking and is k-seal a bad idea on these?

 

Prob just a new rad cap required.

 

Is it defo coolant and not something that has sprayed through the grill? The pattern doesnt look right. Its all over and very random. If it was coming out of the rad or hose it would have a pattern leading to it.

 

It has to be coolant as every couple of days I fill it up to the level then it disappears and I can smell it burning!

 

Pin hole in hose maybe

 

It's deffo not the top hose as I replaced this already with a genuine part as it was well worn.

 

Start engine, get someone to rev it once up to temperature.
Open bonnet.
Observe.

 

Tried that already to no avail!

 

Looks like the top of the rad is starting to go where the plastic end tank meets the core.

Mine went the same way.

 

This could well be the case. If it ever brightens up and stops raining I might actually be able to try and investigate!

Whats the damage for a new rad? Its for a widetrac blob? Im sure I remember seeing japspeed on here doing a special offer?

 

I replaced mine with an all alloy unit for about £100 I think.

Rad is the same for all Blob's, widetrack or not.

 

Mine is on a standard rad, running 400+/400, with no probs, cost £64 locally.

 

Going back to this where exactly do you mean as I cant seem to find a bloody hole anywhere? How did you diagnose yours?

 

Just done the rad on my bugeye at the weekend and there was a crack in the old rad just below the yellow sticker.

The "spray pattern" in the engine bay was the same as yours.

I've got a similar problem on my 05 STI, I'm losing and smelling coolant but it looks like its leaking from the steel pipe (second one from the top down) that comes off the air con rad that then goes round to the bulkhead, it joins the pipe from the air con rad with what looks like a small alloys block which is very corroded, does this make sense? Can I replace the steel pipe? Thanks Stu..

 

I was losing a bit of water and could smell antifreeze on my car. The car had 1.3 bar caps on both the header tank and radiator. I changed the caps back to 1.1 bar and all is ok. I think that running the coolant system at 1.3 bar will find loose clamps or ageing hoses with the increased pressure. Steve.

 

Bit of an update. So I checked the car over this weekend and for the life of me could not find a leak! I cleaned up the stains as pictured above with hopes that it would leak enough for me to spot exactly where its coming from but this time no spray marks anywhere! But in the morning the coolant had gone down from half way to the minimum mark. Any ideas anyone as this is doing my head in. Somebody suggested K-Seal??

 

I'll bet 2 (yes 2) shiney pennies that its the plastic top section of the rad itself, they get hairline splits that are invisible when warmed up as the water coming out evaporates very quickly off the heat given out by the rad itself. Open the bonnet and ask someone to rev the engine and watch it, you'll see it spray out. Dont be using any sealers, they dont work and will just float around your system.

 

I have tried this already! Had my dad rev it whilst I stood there and couldnt see anything! So frustrating!

 

Keep trying it, if its leaking there will be steam/jets.

 

The correct thing to do here and I'm surprised no one has mentioned it, is to pressure test the cooling system.
Using the correct equipment. Ir a cooling system pressure tester

 

Tbh, my dad mentioned that but I thought before going to the garage might be a self diagnosis first!

 

The issue I had with mine is that the plastic end tank was starting to come away from the main core of the Rad.

 

Cant find the leak so I am going to buy a new radiator. Does anyone have the part no for a blobeye 05 radiator?

Why waste £100 on a rad if it's not leaking?

Added to the fact that, unless you know what you're doing, you'll airlock it and then the hg's WILL go

I know what your saying but how else do you explain the constant loss of coolant. And the overspray where its leaking and spilling all over the engine?

 

The head gaskets won't go if it's leaking coolant lol?
