Sorry to be obtuse, but are we certain the pressure cap is OK, not weak spring and lifting?

Seems to be nice and secure. Is this a common thing then?

Is it no fixed yet like? This has been a problem for a month, I hope you haven't been driving the car, or you could have instigated a very serious problem. I hope all is well.

No, car is only used @ the weekends at most and since we have a newborn not much time to do anything at the moment, let alone get the car sorted!

I also smelled coolant after driving, had no trace of leaks and looked until I found a possible solution; a head gasket leak to the outside was seeping only while the system was under pressure and driven.

One entry I found mentioned this was a known problem (with the 2.5L lat least) and if the gasket had not progressed too far, Subaru's 'Coolant Conditioner' might help.
In one case, the treatment had held, at that time, approaching 3 years.

Since our closest dealer is ~45 miles away, I ordered it (X2) on eBay.

Now near a year has passed and the odor is long gone and the coolant level drops only as it should, over time.

My son developed the same problem 1/2 year ago and bought it at the dealer for nearly double the fairly low price I paid.
It worked for him too and neither of us have noticed any deleterious side effects.
The dealer's parts department counter man told him that if it isn't added to your coolant system, it could void the new car warranty; I can't confirm that info though.

I noted that clearly visible below the Subaru label , the bottle had "Holt" molded into it so it is probably from that company's line of 'stop-leak' products.

Your price and source may vary but this is a link to Amazon at a little less than I paid on eBay:

Amazon.com: Subaru SOA635071 OEM Coolant System Conditioner: Automotive Amazon.com: Subaru SOA635071 OEM Coolant System Conditioner: Automotive
