Had an issue with my car since I got it. 70 and above the steering wheel shakes badly. I fitted new 5mm spaces on it today but still not helped.
Already had the wheels balanced 3 times, had the Geometry done as well.

Doesn't happen when I hit the brake pedal so guessing it isn't Disc related.

Are the spacers dead centre?

 

I had this on an old TT - exact same symptoms at roughly the same speed, turned out to be a very slightly buckled wheel.

I'd had wheels balanced repeatedly, geometry, even fitted new discs all round, tried everything then swapped over the wheels and there was the answer.

May not be, but worth trying another set.

 

Also look to your tyres. I had a set go oval on our Xantia, they would NOT stay in balance.

 

Don't they come oval as standard on a xantia?

 

Swap your rears to the front if that cures the problem then you'll know one or both fronts need looking at

 

I had this with an Ibiza FR. As above, it was a buckled wheel.

 

Maybe it's scared

 

So have now done the following and its still shaking at around 70mph.

Rear wheels moved to the front
New brakes pads and Disks
New 5mm spacers from As Performance
Wheel balanced again
Geometry done
Suspension Bolts all Torqued.

Not should I look at next?!

Good Call mate. I will check them, I did grab the wheel at 12oclock position, 6 position and 9 and 3 o'clock position and didn't feel any play but could it still be a problem even without any play??

 

Have you taken each wheel off and spun it up on a tyre machine and looked for it being buckled. Generally if it's over 70 and makes no difference front to back then it will be a damaged wheel.

50-70 is usually where you get a vibration for front wheel balance issues.

 

had this issue on my Foucus: between 70 and 90 lots of vibrations. Yet put the steel wheels on and problem solved.

It was a bucked wheel, 1 only. When they balance it, you can see if it's true round or not. In my case 1 wheel was a bit out of shape and caused all this mess.

depending how bad the vibrations are, I would look on the tyre condition too. same 17" alloys with budget tyres (balanced) used to have slight vibration at around 60mph. Added new goodyear F1 tyres and is all gone.

 

what tyres do you have and what state are they in? worn inner edges leading to a stepped tyre will also cause wheel wobble.
