2.5 STi - What are you looking at to do this properly?
Anyone give me a breakdown of exactly what's required and the cost?
Seriously considering bullet proofing mine and some more power!
Ideally looking for a safe 350-360ish as I understand 400+ gets a lot more costly.
Would really appreciate comment from some of the respected builders on here.

Piece of string, how long?
DIY, Engine Builder or Specialist and budget?
Edit to add; Intended use and ultimate power target?

I would say a minimum of 2.5k for the short block alone plus water pump uprated oil pump gaskets etc etc. it would be rude not to do the clutch while the engines out too plus decat and map to get it to 360bhp ish
You get the idea

My advice... Know your limits.. Don't kid yourself or bullsh1t yourself.. Be totally honest.. Will you be 100% happy with mid 300's..?? Mid 300's you should be ok with oem rods.. But in honesty if I was to do mine again I would get the block closed and machined for 14mm head studs.. Plus all the other bits..
Will you want more when it's all said and done and run in?? Even after a few months?? I would hazard a guess that EVERYONE who has a new build wants MORE after a few months.. I certainly do.. But sadly (for me) I didn't get the block closed or 14mm studs..
As a minimum you'll require..
Pistons.
Head gasket.
Oil pump.
Head studs.
Fluids.
But IMHO you'll be foolish not to get belts done plus water pump and clutch..
Then while it's part you may aswell get the block closed and 14mm studs... It just goes on and on and on...
That's why I said be honest with your self...

I have a 2.5 forged build and get plenty of sleep thanks ! Had 2 builds now ! First build (rb5 ) was a semi closed block , pinned , 14 mm studs blah blah , garret gt35 575 bhp no issues then the engine did time attack and never missed a beat ! 2nd build and present run 475 bhp , hawkeye spec d ,Linered block , forged blah blah , 1.8 bar , 475 bhp ( different turbo )no issue ! Maybe I'm lucky ? Lol !

Joking aside, how is the Spec D, you got anymore plans for it??
TBH the bare minimum for me and a proper 2.5L would be to spend the little extra and as above closed deck inserts and 14mm head studs, In an Ideal world I'd spend a couple of grand on the heads too but if money is an issue may be dumb down on the head work and spend it on the Block as heads are pretty bullet proof.
You can go for a basic build and take your chances, but if your paying someone to take the engine out and put it back I think belt and braces is the best approach as it will save you money in the long run, ok it's £2k more but the motto "Do it right, do it once" is a good one to follow.
I'd also say choose your engine builder wisely otherwise you'll end up like me with 2 broken engines and DIYing to get a decent one.

but then again I really fancy going back to an old 80,s style car ! 205 gti or mk1 golf gti ! Might be tempted to sell for £10500 so if you know of any Interest then give us a shout ! Cheers maz
I paid a bit over 5k for my 2.5 WRX forged and rebuilt, Mahle, STI gaskets, modified oil pump, stage 2 clutch while it was in bits and lots of other bits I can't remember!

My old 04 WRX Saloon is running 360/370 with 2.5 STI bottom end and original 5 speed for about 5yrs now and still going, but the car is little more than a shopping trolly for the guy that owns it now.
If your not going to give it a hard life then you can get away with it, but if the car above was still mine I'd have probably killed the engine and several boxes by now.
I've driven it a couple of times and he ***** himself when I do and so do I, just waiting for the gearbox to fall apart and watching the temp gauge rise inside a few minutes spirited driving and that's still not caining it and being mindful of it's shortcomings.
Pointless waste of money IMO, if your going to do it make sure you do it so you can cane it without worrying all the time.

Why rebuild it if there is nothing wrong with it?
Personally I'd run it at your intended 360/360 as it is and don't worry about it. Then if it does a HG or ringland - rebuild and don't worry about it!

Drive in drive out fully forged with arp studs, Cosworth gaskets, block bored and faces skimmed new 11mm oil pump, new cam belt and water pump, heads stripped, skimmed and rebuilt, all new Subaru seals and gaskets- £3500, if you wanted to go closed deck £4000, closed deck with 14mm studs £4500.
Ive been doing around 1 a week for the past few months.

If your not planing on going over 400bhp you can do the job for £2.5k even less if there's no signs of failure, as it can be done without splitting the block and just using drop in pistons, Drop in Pistons, ARP head studs and fresh head gaskets, DIY would see you done for under a grand, if your feeling brave.

Closed deck with 11arp studs and std compression I would say about 500bhp, 11mm cosworth ultimate studs probably 550, 14mm studs - I can't say how far you can go with that setup as I havn't seen any failures yet, but there are plenty of engines running 600bhp. I'm just building a 2.5cdb with 14mm studs from AS Performance, it going to be running close to 500, but we wanted to keep it safe with the big studs.
