i have just got my car back from where i had it off the road for the last 2 or so years ,

there is a list of things to do before it is drivable but also noticed some rust spots ,
i'm not sure exactly what i should be prioritising my time and money on , maybe it doesnt matter but opinions are welcome

so far i have bought engine , gearbox, diff oil and sparkplugs , plan was to give it a service first

i've also bought a presure washer and cleaning stuff , started striping door trims and seals of to clean it properly , while doing this i noticed a few rust spots , i think i should deal with these first .

i plan to do all work myself , with the help of youtube and fellow enthuisiasts on here .

the list of things to do

4 tyres possably khumo on mytyres £50 each
timing belt price and where from not confirmed
brake discs and caliper refurb , possably from godspeed on here
filters , maybe from subaru
thorough clean interior , not sure on products to use or where from
engine bay clean up no ideas yet
car stereo

 

Has it been dry stored?

 

First thing - nice to see you getting it back on the road

Next (and here's where the discussion starts) - it has to go through an MoT.

Then - you need to make sure it won't get fcuked because of problems related to oil, cambelt etc. etc.

Interior, ICE etc. don't matter at all until the car's properly roadworthy.

it wasnt dry stored

it was pretty much on a farm , a family friend has a workshop there he does car body repairs , he did a cheap basic job fixing dents over those years ,

it was pretty grubby hence the money spent on power washer and cleaning stuff and the strip down and clean job i'm doing .

my plan is to o the service and brakes before i mot it , it was mot'd just before going off the road i'm hoping lol , that the mot wont be to bad

this car is more a hobby than a driver if you know what i mean , i will be doing all the work myself , spent the last couple of hours on youtube looking at spray painting i've allreay watched videos on how to do the cambelt , way i see it if someone else can do so can i , just a matter of finding out how

Just thinking of rust wise, worst place is on grass cars rust like crazy on grass.

 

 

i know you are right , maybe should make slabbing the garden a priority , no garages near me, damn it .
i even asked a neighbour if they would rent me theres , its a great size ouble garage he doesnt use for his car , its half empty as well . can he not see the subaru sitting on grass lol

Winter is the worst if there left stood in ice and snow don't like it, saying that can't see the salt on the roads helping either lol

To be honest why do builders make houses with front gardens its not like your going to sunbathe on them, just tarmac the lot i say, man i love tarmac

Yeah that water gets in all the gaps and freezes and expands, hence all the pot holes on the roads, what it does to our cars i don't like to think.

If mine is outside i throw old blankets over the bonnet protect engine, then car cover. But got garage space at the mo

 

Next best thing is a car port, if you have space at the side of the house.

Seen one guy store his classic car in one and fit plastic sheets on all sides lol looked odd, like his car was on life support

Just go for it mate!
Im doing the same rubbed down my rear quarters repaired them and painted them.
Now Ive moved on to my A pillars rubbed them down to bare metal and etch primered them.
Just taking my time and trying to get it right, I now know about half a dozen ways not to paint a car lol!

Yeah it is, but you need to treat rusted areas properly with it and not expect it to restore anything that's beyond saving

 

Might give that ago, got my drivers arch to do, i did it 2 years ago and payed a comapny to spray it £90, and rust came back, this time i will cut it out.

 

Work begins on making a driveway tomorrow , digging up the grass the old fashioned way , the cost to get digger lower kerb etc works out near 2000 so it's not going to be perfect but will be somewhere to work on it and not have a sitting on the grass ,

My neighbours might think I'm nuts but wait untill I put the car inside my tent to do spray painting

and what did i do with all that turf , well , i dont what you would call it but this lol

 

i,m going to slab it , there is a company sells second hand 3x2 slabs for £3.25 each i need 44 so £143 for the slabs , gravel would cost about the same and be much easier so i am tempted just to gravel it , but slabs would be better for working on .

to do it right i should dig it down further and get about 7ton of type1 balast then i would need to hire one of those vibrating plate compactor thing , it starts to get to expensive .

i hope with 3x2 slabs it will spread the wait more and be ok , that plus the fact im not going to be driving the car in and out very often

if i slab it i would probably use sand for leveling not sure how much or price of that

so dilemma is , order gravel and be done with it or get slabs and do my back in lol

 

Lol nice one, i'd slab it, half of my drive is gravel and its a pain to work on your car, the jacks just sink and want to fall over.

I'm in the process of slabbing a walkway and will be using sand to level it up. But not sure how i'd go about that with a car going on it and on a slight slope.

I know 2 people who have same kind of layout as your place and they have both used bricks, can't remember what its called but looks like picture below, didn't cost them loads, but i think slabbing would be alot cheaper and easier to lay

 

the proper way to slab it is to put down 150mm of type1 gravel then use a wacker plate to compress it , that means alot more digging down plus around 9 ton of type 1 and the hire of the wacker works out about £400 plus the extra digging .

at the moment im thinking put down 50mm of gravel works out about 3 ton help with any sinking plus levelling for laying the slabs on .

possably picking up 22 2x2 slabs later today for 20 quid , i still need about another 11 2x2 and 22 3x2 ,

anyway its getting there , took the fence out today aswell and got a trailer to put the rest of the turf in

 

Slabs for sure as jacks etc will sink and be a pain on gravel!

Also some ramps so you can reverse the car back up the drive, put the ramps infront an drive it on, no jacking required and the car is then level to work on underneath

the council were around ,put a stop to it untill i do some paperwork and pay them £108 for permission to lower the kerb , which they say i have to do before doing anymore work on the drive .

most quotes to have the kerb lowered are £750 to £850 but found one guy who will do it for £550

couple of weeks before he can do it .

not happy , its money i could of spent on the car but at least i'll have a drive at the end of it , surprised how efficient the councel were at coming to the door

 

Someone must have said something to them. Because there normally not that good, unless someone on council saw it.

My father in law used wooden ramps for ages until council lowered the curb for him, not sure if he had to pay though
