I have seen some excellent wheels displayed in the members gallery recently. Some have been refurbed but many have been bought/swapped etc etc.

They are normally accompanied by a statement of supporting upgrades like remaps, mods and BHP ***** waving. Or how these mods will be next on the list. But why the **** are people paying good money for all these upgrades then fitting Wanli/Linglong/Accelera ditchfinders?

I am no tyre snob but I understand the importance of fitting appropriate tyres for the type of car I drive. Are some people oblivious to the use of such crap on what is a high performance car and in the wrong hands an accident waiting to happen.

Totally agree. It is a pet hate of mine when I see a car with all sorts of handling upgrades but then have shoddy tyres. From experience I have found that good tyres are the best upgrade you can do on a Subaru. Cheap ditchfinders completely change the way the car handles, and certainly not for the better!!

 

I'm guessing your a bit of an old timer. I was always taught that tyres are the most important thing on a car.

These young whipper snappers don't seem to get that, I think it comes from owning corsa's and saxo's etc, then they go to somewhere like halfrauds and buy these wheel tyre packages wrapped in a set of lingalongs and think the car handles better, which it usually does because they went 3 sizes wider and the car only has 28bhp and front wheel drive so not so much of an issue. However that doesn't translate to 300bhp subarus which is something i'm sure they will discover the first time it rains.

 

I think it all depends on people's budget really and intended use of the car but I have to agree with the OP about modified cars and said owners scrimping on descent tyres,it's a accident waiting to happen.SJ.

The only contact with the road so always go premium, doesn't really matter what car you drive. At least a Scooby is 4WD.

 

I've bought decent tyres in past, and not been impressed at all, best tyres i ever had where a brand i'd never heard of, had nearly 8mm tread and they never ***** out sold car with them on after owning for a number of years insane

Now i just go for middle of the road tyres

 

Good tyre's transform the car, and Also make your mates envious when you pass them in the wet on circuit and are easily the biggest single performance upgrade you can perform as far as driving the car hard is concerned.
Budget tyre's should come with some kind of safety warning ("If you buy these you will hit a tree or the Rangerover stopping 2miles in front of you".) The same goes for cheap brake pads, WTF! is with people buying these, why would you buy a performance car with lots of power and grip and then trust your life/car to a set of budget brake pads!!

Tyres by their very nature should wear that's how they grip I would be concerned if I was getting little wear as they are not doing their job.

Agreed for some reason people think the only way you can go faster is to up the power of the car. Tyres , brakes and suspension play a massive part and its overlooked. Anyone who has seen a Lotus on track with a competent driver will have witnessed that power is not everything.

 

I'm not recommending budget tyres for high performance cars, this was back in the small hatch back 1.3, years when i new nothing about tyres, but the car handled was fine and the tyres just never seemed to wear, plus in the 90's small hatchbacks weighed nothing which helped lol

 

The most infuriating bit are the idiots who post the "what tyre" threads, only to ignore all the advice and buy the budget crap because "oh I can't afford it"

It's normally the same folk who reckon Imprezas have self learning ECU's (like Skynet in Terminator perhaps....) and get surprised when their engine starts knocking after they fitted a full decat, FMIC etc etc.

Most people pay little or no attention to what make of tyres a car has when looking at it.

Always remember, you're tyres are the last line of defence between you and a brick wall.

 

It's like anything you can buy with that word before it BUDGET it means just that made to less exacting standards cheaper materials used,workers,machinery etc...I.e a cheaper process altogether.SJ.

I understand too. I dispair when a high performance car comes in to have a set of tyres fitted, I look at the job sheets/delivery notes to see landsail, linglong, goodride etc. WHY!!!??? They are bad enough on normal cars let alone something that does 0-60 in sub 5seconds.

Kumho and Fulda are boarderline cheap skate....but on a Merc SL55 AMG... COME ON!!

Pirelli Rosso, AvonZZ3, Dunlop SportMaxx and Yokohama Paradas are poor tyres too..at the bottom end of the branded range (although some retailers will overprice them), better that the Chinese/Korean stuff though. I can forgive people buying these as they are probably being misled rather than being cheap.

The budget stiff doesn't even balance well. Assuming a true wheel, I usually end up using more weights on a cheapy tyre than a GoodYear or Michelin.

You see, this is where some may argue.

I have ran many types of top end and mid range tyres over the years on an array of performance cars, and while it may be suggested that Avon ZZ3's and Falkens are borderline, I would argue that there performance and safety outweigh the price.

Both Falkens and Avons I have had on my current car are excellent, and have given no concern even track driving in the wet.

However when i first bought my V4 STI Type R from, lets say, an unscrupulous Subaru specialist in the Cornwall area, it came with FULLRUNs. Twice they nearly killed me int he wet, both at 30mph, one time a flat spin down a steep hill after just buying the car. I knew I was going to take it easy with them, but I thought they could handle 30mph!

Im not a great driver by any means but possibly a little better than the average boy racer , and they made me spin out so heaven knows what they would of done to a chav in a baseball cap! Seriously dangerous, should be banned.

 

Mostly agree, Although I had Yokohama Parada Spec 2's on my Civic Type R and they were very good.

Firestone have some pretty decent tyres as well. However Goodyear F1's all round on the scooby

 

I was never bothered about xenon HID lights until I got my Scooby and have been driving with them.

Drove my focus in the dark the other night and stopped to check my bulbs hadn't blown and to give them a clean. Felt like I was driving with just my sides on

 

My funds are rather low at the moment I've just had stick some ****ty Mohawks on my wrx, instantly drives like rwd, soft and not grippy, have to get saving and get some decent rubber all round

 

What do the rating on side of tyres mean? My tyre place said that the Hankook they have for my car. 245.35.19's @ £208 a corner were sound rating C and Yet grip rating. B

I disagree, rubber is rubber after all, im just about to fit linglongs to my 480bhp blob cant beat a bit over steer �� lol

 

They have new ratings now, how much road noise they make, fuel economy and how good they are for grip. A bit more information about the tyre for the consumer
