Pay for TV license even if you don't have a TV
At present it is only needed for live broadcasts either on TV or computer
So if you have no TV and watch pre-recorded BBC program's you do not require one
But a bit like the old Tax disk, technology is making it a bit of an anathema

I know a friend of my parents who genuinely dont have a TV (they got rid of it), but still pay the licence as it was that much hassle and even three visits from the TV licencing team / enforcement team, where not believed so it was simply easier to pay for one !

Problem is they are both old, one is in a wheel chair, I guess they took the view its just easier to pay it. If try and intervene, TV licence people insist on only talking to the person who name they have on record. I have tried !

Don't let them pay just for the sake of paying though.

Will give the letter a go but, they have admitted to having a pc - but with no tv tuner in so I wonder if this is the excuse the licensing is using ?

They've always been the same, my dad used to work in TV repairs in the 60s and 70s and he told me about one Fisherman who bought a TV for his boat and requested the retailer remove the receiver from the TV as he just watched videos on it whilst at sea. He got a letter of confirmation from the retailer that his TV had had the receiver removed and was unable to receive any transmissions and yet the TV Licensing still took him to court insisting he had to have a licence.
The judge took one look at the letter from the retailer and threw the case out straight away and berated the TV Licence enforcement for wasting his, the courts and the Fisherman's time. In the end they were forced to pay all of the Fisherman's fees plus cover his loss of earnings for the day in court.
They never learn and will just keep pushing and pushing until they get their own way.

Good point.
I get many threatening sounding letters from the TV license people in red ink. I laugh maniacally as I throw them in the bin every week.
The only people that have been sent to court for not having a TV licence are people that have admitted to having a TV but not a licence. No TV detection as ever been used in a court of law. I rang TV licence people last week and told them I don't need a licence. I said I have a TV that is used by my kids to watch dad's . They asked my name. My reply was " I'm not abliged to give you my name". They said they will send someone round to confirm I don't need a licence. My reply was " all rights of access to my property have been revoked an if anyone from TV licencing come onto my property they will be fined 5 thousand pounds". I received a letter from them today saying all letter's will be stopped and I will not hear from them for 2 year's. ... saving myself just under 300 quid. Will spend that on the car. Cheers.
I think its only fair people should continue to pay the license fee even if they don't have a tv,. It is true the iplayer service is soo good we should be grateful its there as everyone uses it

The TV licence people have no right of entry and they need a search warrant to access your property. Even then IIRC you don't have to let them in because it's a civil matter. They can't just get warrants because they suspect you might be watching TV, they need evidence like a confession or to see the TV through a window.
The rules were changed a while ago - once you needed a licence for owning a TV, now you need to own it and watch live TV, so just having a TV isn't enough.
