Back on the hunt to get my hands on my first scoobie!!
Been looking at 04/05 and 05/06.
I'm leaning towards the hawkeye... Personal opintion I think they look mean as f%^k!!! but also want to find one on the cheap tax bracket lol .

Been looking at one from JCT Cars Barnsley, anyone had any experience with them??

Also any good points / bad points for either hawkeye or blob eye?? and anything to look out for or stay clear of??

Any help would be great!!

If your looking for a hawkye impreza I would buy a 2ltr version as that means its a Jap car and far far superior to a uk 2'5ltr version

Really, never new the Jap Hawkeye was 2lt.
Arn't imports a nightmare with parts etc?

 

They are a pain with dealers but not with parts.

 

Most on here will warn of the 2.5 engine on the hawks which is prone to failure, check the sticky at the top for real world examples of poor owners going through this. Some even day its a matter of when, not if.

I prefer the front of the hawks and the dials, but have previously owned and also buying again, a 2005 Blob with the more reliable 2.0

Options?

(1) Buy a 2.5 Hawk knowing the engine may fail and cost £3K to replace

(2) Buy a hawk that has already gone bang and been fitted with a stronger, forged engine

(3) As mentioned, buy a JDM hawk which has the 2.0 engine, despite that and other benefits, do know they have equal length headers so dont have the Scooby burble everyone loves. They do sound nice in their own right (to some)

(4) Buy a Blob STI and get over it - the look does grow on you like it did me. Detango the front and add a splitter

...now you know why the Hawks can be found cheap and the 2005 blob hold their price. Plus, tax brackets as mentioned

 

Wouldn't buy a Hawk unless you fancy footing a £3k for the inevitable engine rebuild.

If you don't fancy that but still really want one then grab one with a forged engine by a reputable specialist or get a JDM version.

A forged 2.5 engine is a fantastic thing on the road.

Its ok until you push it then also a 2.5ltr engine runs out of puff around 6000rpm when flooring it on my turbo's

 

The 2.5 Hawks are fast but not as much fun IMHO in their UK guise DBW throttle and engine issues alone, I would always go 2.0 for piece of mind

 

Agree with 53, I test drove a PPP Hawk and RB320 when I was first looking, they are torquey low down but I much enjoyed the rev...BANG TURBO KICK of the 2.0.

Again, all subjective of course. The 2.5, I imagine, would be an easier day to day cruiser.

 

It will go at some point, its just a matter of when. If like me you wanted a hawk then just get it, enjoy it and worry about the engine when it goes/is going.

I've had both STi blob and now run a 98k spec d STi 2.5 Hawk that is rapid

Don't be put off by the 2.5

2.0 everytime.

 

Normal tax for my hawk and still going strong at 70k with 370bhp so not all are doomed IMO ,, iv also had more 2ltrs go wrong on me than 2.5s so they don't scare me lol

 

It's a fact that anybody can break any engine if they really want to..

 

I've had my run of bad luck with engines, my old Navarra failed on me, got her fixed (2.5k) by what turned out to be a shady garage and blew two years later with another 2.2K bill... biggest loss I have ever had ahaha.

I love the hawkeye, just abit sacred of it going pop! but like you say anything can break.
Its just the tell tail signs!???? and trying to find a right one for the right money

 

and what is a fordged engine?

 

My RB320 had the common issue of HG when mods were starting to pile up..

Yes cost me £3000+ to repair but when rebuilt with all the forged goodies reliabilty is great and the torque is what teh 2.0 litre engines can only dream of compared to BHP

 

2.0 are too laggy for my liking.

 

£3k ish to put your car right and even better is cheaper than buying a new car that wouldn't be as good.

You get great torque from a 2.5

Minds just shy of 360 torque on a standard car. Running 319.4 bhp

It's usually taken to mean an engine that's been fitted with forged, rather than cast pistons. It can also include forged con rods or crankshaft.
Forgings produce better material, suited to high stress applications.

 

I wouldn't call the 2 litre twin scroll laggy

The WRX's 2.5 engines don't have much of a problem, the STI engines on the other hand!
