As you say Shaun the bigport heads and cams improve the VE massively making it far easier to produce a good result from a given turbo.

Richard,
I would say you're about right with your figures attained then.

It shouldn't be a given that you can achieve 450bhp on these types of turbo (as GT30 cores), standard position, VPower and on a Subaru 2ltr.

Thanks Shaun I think I'll just have to accept that this turbo won't do what I want on this car. I'm now considering a V or an SC turbo or perhaps even a rotated set up.

Rotated would be my choice, will be a little laggy but works well with the JDM ratios

Personally.... I wouldn't go any larger on a 2ltr. It's the reason why I've never personally gone any bigger than a LM450 Billet. For that extra umph I've resorted to 20% meth. I retain the spool and gain the extra torque and power.

Considering that mine was originally a full twinscroll set-up, I couldn't sacrifice additional lowdown urgency myself. It's a fine line between retaining the sweet spot and having a car that has to be worked to get up and go.

I'd be looking at your heads if I were you..... AVCS is an option, but I suspect won't be cheap.

I bought one of the early P18 exhaust housed MD321T 2nd hand, put it on my car replacing an Andy Forrest billet 20G - it did pretty much exactly the same numbers as the 20G - approx 410HP on Vpower, this was JGM mapping it at SRR.

That was at 1.5 bar dropping to 1.4 bar, we couldn't get it to hold any more boost and suspected a weak actuator. I then sent the turbo to Lateral to get it refreshed and upgraded to the billet compressor in original cover. Once back I then changed the actuator to a 1.2 bar one.

This is what it did at 1.7bar Vpower - 458HP - it then went on to do 500HP on Sunoco RMR (100Ron MSA spec fuel) + 20% meth.

Cheers Banny, if I keep her I think I may just go down that route. What's the best rotated set up for a 2L, I know you've done it.

I would get John at braveheart to make you a setup, it will be cheaper than RCM and probably fit better too. I did mine on a standard newage bottom end so played it safe with torque and only pushed it on 20% meth. However it made and easy 450bhp on v power at roughly 1.8bar

Meth graph and boost was tapered so peak boost was at peak power, with you running a forged bottom end you could run a flat boost profile. This was an old school not billet GT3076 and with the new billet wheeled versions defo more spool and power available

To be honest Shaun if I was to go to the expense of AVCS I'd be looking to do all sorts of other things at the same time like a 2.1 build & I can't really justify that when the car is running so well. I'll just keep it on the Meth map until I decide wether I'm going for a bigger turbo.

Cheers Banny, It does look a little laggy, but I'm guessing with that sort of power you'd drive drive around the issue happily. I'm seriously tempted to keep her & go down this route now, or if I sell up May do this to a Blob STI.

Standard sti 3 heads and it was very easy to keep it on the power, in the real world spool plays a small part the gearstick plays the biggest part

PMSL @ "the real world".

That's what I used to say when I owned Escort and RS500 Cossies..... however by the time I had cogged down and still waited for the boost to build, my mates STI Classic was well in front.

Lowdown torque and instant "foot down" mid range punch is king on the road.

1500rpm powerbands do nothing in the "real world", apart from smashing gearboxes, clutches, bending valves, wasting fuel and overstressing everything.

That's why I drive a diesel every day...... or is that because I'm a tight old fart.

Read this thread with quite some interest... here is why:
I got my 05 sti rebuilt to a 2.33 (de-stroked 2.5) and has a brand new MDX321T on it.

Engine built properly, wiseco pistons, acl bearings etc BUT I am running PPP exhaust with sports cat, HS ported headers and uppipe + also standard top mount intercooler.

What do ppl think it will make ? I expect around 400 bhp and 550 ish NM torque all this on V-power and max 1.5 bar boost.

I am running in the engine now, but nice and slowly, so probably about 2 month till i get the proper map. I must say, it builds up boost unbelievably quickly, so it is a challenge to drive it off boost. I have the feeling it is a lot quicker spooling than my vf35(which was pretty nice too and will come on sale soon btw) and earlier too. Ofc for now I only ever hit once 0.5 bar, but that was at around 3000 rpms

Hi Richard, at what rpm did your car hit full boost?

Simba none of these guys are around now and there are more responsive turbos about now BUT they would have made boost around 3800-4000 revs,,with a 2.0litre
