Cheers SJ & Mattee.

Had a good back end of this year for running setting some new PBs. Have done plenty of miles and lost weight (had to start buying new T-shirts in medium as large ones looked terrible on me)

Blimey - serious running!
I seem to be "stuck" at 10k distances; I just can't find the time to run for more than an hour at a time but I probably ought to get a marathon under my belt at some stage.

My best official 10k (a hilly road road with a killer 1km finishing hill!) is 40m07s but I've GPSd sub 38m on a flat cinder track twice.

My best "race pace" is for a Fun Run (which I maybe took a little too seriously!) was a 3.5 mile route (6k?) at with one evil, long hill at 5m55s/mile which is around 3m40s/km (I think!)

But 99% of my running is coastal stuff where averages are low (lucky to get 7m30s/mile on most runs), obstacles are many and mistakes are harshly punished with falling off a cliff.

My regular route is here and I absolutely LOVE it!

I have one 5 mile route and a quicker, 3.8 mile one (home to Pentire Point and back) around this area - they are both sodding hard work but very rewarding. Road running bores me to death but it's good to get a pace marker done once in a while.

I have an awesome reputation to keep up

I know (not very well) a few Elite runners and triathletes - they are a fair bit quicker again - road 10k runs in the low 30s But they are all bloody skinny I also know a few ultra runners - they quite often do 50 MILE runs - sometimes even 100!!

The Brownlee brothers do comfortably under 30min 10Ks after swimming a mile AND cycling a long way at full tilt - OMG!

Have you done any tris?

There's a really weird muscle transition where you go from weightless swimming to cycling (a lot of people fall off) then into running where your glutes are nearly disabled do you run like someone who is pi55ed for the first half mile!

Never really got into road cycling but I was shocked at how aggressively people ride in the tris I've done; very close, very angry if you pass!

No , iv only done a few !

Bike to Run is really quite bizzare though for the first few hundred yards

I over did it on first tri bike section thats for sure , i felt close to pulling something and was dog slow as result

The tri here is on front road with two way traffic of competitors, its better to shout your approach than steam into someone coming the other way !

Signed up for my first Tri (sprint) in 2015. Suppose I ought to put in a bit of pool time!

ChrisB - great times there, you've beaten my half and 10k PBs

I got a Suunto Ambit 2 HR to replace my stolen Garmin; awesome bit of kit.

Tested it by running from Charmouth to Golden Cap and back holy cr4p that is one VERY hilly (and slippery) coast path; half killed me.

Also did a 9 mile coast run last week; that made the legs smart too.

This Suunto thing is SO good! I can download a surfing app to track all my waves (!), the HRM is brilliant, it has stacks of really interesting data and the battery lasts ages.

Just did a night cliff run (rather hairy...!) and it was brilliant.

They're fairly cheap now so if anyone is into any sport, get one!

I wanted it as I do a lot of hilly stuff. The Ambit 2 HR also has a better battery life and is 100m water resistant compared to 50m for the cheaper ones. But I'm sure they're really good too.
I got mine for just over £200 off Amazon; a bit of a bargain I reckon.

Maybe; the (stolen from me) Garmin was decent but the Suunto is so much better made, gets an instant GPS lock (the 910xt often took many minutes!), battery lasts way longer and it can pass as a big watch rather than wrist computer.

Garmin's CS was also cr4p.

But I don't think it is waterproof, and I quite like the thought of wearing it windsurfing too

The 305 is useless, other than on a run etc

I wouldnt say that; it's cracking VFM and does a lot; no barometer or swim metrics but it does most other stuff. It's quite bulky though.

Hodgy; sounds good! You can add stuff like surfing/windsurfing apps to it to record various things (tide times too).
One bit I really liked; after my run tonight, it mapped my route and showed how hard I was working the whole time; red up hills, orange on easier bits, etc then it gives you an estimated recovery time (16 hours for this run); very clever and useful to a goon like me who is prone to overtraining...

I did one Duathlon with a friend at Castle Coombe once. Run 1 lap, Cycle 5, Run 1 lap. Never again! Totally understand that transition thing although I likened it to having been given Ketamine. My legs aren't built for cycling. My bike isn't built for cycling!!!! I have a lot of respect for the multi-discipline eventers.

I've been using a 310xt for the last 3 years. Cracking battery life but it's totally crap at satellite lock, taking eons at times. That said, it's bulletproof

I've had my 310XT for 4 1/2 years now.

Would agree with SJ that the GPS lock can have a tantrum at times, though it's weird especially when a long way from home (ie on holiday in Europe). For instance, the first time it's turned on it'll lock as quickly as it does at home (assuming I turned it on outside) but the 2nd time it will do a cold start and take ~6 to 10 minutes which is annoying.

I had just the same with my 910xt - I'd be off for a quick run then have to wait 5 minutes for it to lock - a couple of times I had to turn it off and back on again twice! It's not the end of the World but it's annoying.

My Suunto seems to take around 10 seconds, even indoors.

Happy new year health freaks

Well I kicked my new year back in with 2 months of alcohol free, purely because I've drank far too much over the Xmas period. Although I nay need to have a few glasses of wine in Feb if I book a weekend away for a birthday break

Started my 3 days on, 1 day rest at the gym on Friday (rest tomorrow) and pushing myself harder than usual this time, I just hope I can sustain it injury free. Day1 chest, Day2 back and shoulders, day3 arms, with each day having one leg exercise, a run, 150 crunches & leg raises, and weighted dips.

Diet will be back to high protein, low fat and med carb, probably a 60P/25C/15F or thereabouts.

I've managed to put on a stone since my football injury, and I'm just about over it now, I can sustain a run with minimal knee niggles, and I've promised myself I won't be going for surgery on it so I must get back Into shape. I feel heavy at the moment but I'm sure this kick start of correct eating and gym sessions will do the job. I've managed some bulking on shoulders, chest and arms during my buggered knee time, but ideally I want to be fit not heavy.

I'll get some snaps for my own reference soon so I can reflect back in two months

Need some help from the fitness and weight training guys in here.

I started going to the gym last year and had a decent program given to me to get me used to going. Really enjoyed going but my home life made it difficult to commit.

Anyway, I want to get a few things for home. My bedroom is quite big and I'm moving my little one into her own room so will have space where the cot is for a bench of some description. However, I've no idea where to start.

A small weights set is a good start; Argos does good sets.
I'd avoid a bench as home ones are a bit flimsy and proper bench pressing on your own can be risky.
Also get a skipping rope; excellent home cardio.

Get a basic routine sorted; home weights aren't good for proper bulking but for toning and fitness, it's fine.
Mix up weights and body weight stuff.
I also recommend a Theraband; basically a giant elastic band available in colour coded resistance levels; incredibly versatile, good for joints and easy to chuck in a bag. Most exercises can be replicated with one.

I can write up a routine once I'm home.
Don't splash out big money on a rower/step machine/whatever!

That would be great, much appreciated.

To be honest at some point I'll go back to the gym, haven't stopped my membership. I prefer to go in the morning and be back before I have to take my kids to school but it means having to rely on the 13 year old getting the 2 year old ready and it invariably ended up going pear shaped!

Anything that can use up 30 to 40 mins in the morning would be great. I'm quite a thin lad so have little to no fat to burn off so working on tone and fitness would be a great at first then when I can train my kids a bit better I can get into the gym to start working on a little bulk. It's something I've wanted to do for years and if I don't give it a try now I never will!
