Back in the day, they were mental numbers (for a, ahem, 'repmobile saloon' ).

There was an immaculate example often parked up in Braintree town centre, when I used to take the post to the PO, after work. Stunning.

OP, what's the real-world, on-road driving experience like? Is it really tail-happy when the boost kicks in, for example?

I think you'll find the top speed was 176 mph .
Attained at the Nardo track in Italy. Vauxhall never claimed a top speed for it. It was said the Lotus Carlton was over geared in fifth never mind sixth. Sixth geared at a lofty 44 mph/1000rpm!

Like my old Triumph Spitfire 1500... With overdrive for 3rd and 4th.
