Old school motors

I owned a couple of phase 2's, the best being a one year old in pearl white, never let me down. Some years later I bought another for old times sake but it turned out to be a money pit.
My neighbour at the time had the Raider limited edition in blue, bet there's not many around now.

a car i would have again is a cavalier gsi2000 2wd as i had 2 before and i love them but most are rotten now, there is an old boy around here with a mint h-plate silver one but he wont sell it-so im gonna wait until he snuff's it then go and ask his wife
i also know of a almost mint carlton gsi3000 12v thats a barn find.the guy will sell it but i dont have the room for it which is a shame as i can see myself drifting around the midlands in an 80's barge with guns and roses blasting from the tape-deck
its been parked up for about 10 years along with a few isuzu piazza turbo's (remember them) a few sd1'2 and a ac-cobra kit car thing

I've owned 18 MK2 Astras (16 were GTE 16v) over the years. Still got two shells in my clutches. Got a Cavalier 4x4 Turbo that's been converted to a B308 Saab V6 lump. Got fed up of welding requirements hence turning to Jap. Will never regret the move.
The idea of owning old school motors generally outweighs the actual ownership. I used to get complimented on a snotty, 232k mile 8v GTE all the time but trying to explain to those complimenting what an utter ******* the car(s) are/were to own was hard work.
Very much love/hate. The Cav is on my **** list at the moment but visions of an LS1 V8, RWD and vacant workshop space are keeping it in ownership for now.
I know of a MK1 GTE shell that's rolling still in Gloucestershire. Was a 320bhp NATO Green monster before being broken and sold. Wants work, but then anything remotely 70/80s does now.

I'm trying to source a MK1 escort at the minute, I have managed to find a very tidy looking MK2 for €1000 but need to get a few more details and go see it in the flesh, but my heart is really set on a MK1, I don't care what engine is in it but a 1.6 would be nice, just want something simple to tinker with and have a bit of RWD action at low speed.

I toyed with the idea of buying another mk3 cav to put the Saab 204 (iirc) lump in but never got round to it as usual, struggled to find one worth repairing body wise tbh

One of the guys I shared a workshop with converted it in 2005 after blowing up one transfer box and 2 LET bottom ends. We (the then group of friends) went V6 as it did away with the massive torque spike that helps kill the transfer boxes and could get 208bhp out of the box without the reliability issues/price premium for a LET lump. I've owned two Cav Ts in recent years and the converted 6 pot suits the car way better than the 4pot Turbo motor does. Is a much better cruiser and sounds gruff. Slight weight penalty but nothing major.
I'm split on keeping it as is and doing headers/management for 240-250bhp or binning the lot and going V8. A RWD one has been done with a Sierra floorpan but that was a LET running around 600bhp.
The Saab-converted one has never seen a welder for anything over than bracket repositioning or stitch welds. Very lucky by all accounts.

My gaffer has got a 2.3L V6 Cortina, and his dad has a Ford Zephyr(sp).
IIRC, the Zephyr was used in a period TV programme, possibly Heartbeat.
Neither of them are my cup of tea, but, they are nice enough for what they are.
Had a couple of Cav's before the Impreza.
Had a 2.0L 8V 4X4, that most insurance companies were convinced was a Cav Turbo.
After that had a GSI 2000, that car was mint condition, no scabby arches. Went down to RAF Marham to buy that.

Interesting selection of cars below, even had a great example of my old favourite, the 5GT Turbo.

I had a 1.6 and 1.9 GTi. If I bought another I'd like to stick a turbo on it.
In my early 30s I owned one of these. It was a mint, one previous owner job. I'd always drooled over them as a kid, especially as one of the boys at my school used to get picked up in one. So I went and bought one.

I think these are stunning cars, would love one if I had more room.
Not too fussed about going really old school - as someone else has said, the thought is better than the reality.

Sorry, my mistake. It was a non M 635csi as it was an auto, I think the M cars were manual only.
It was still stunning though, got looks where ever I went. (the pic above is just an example, not my actual car)
As gorgeous as it looked it did put me off classic cars for life.
