Tried to buy a TV and, NOW I'VE GOT ONE!!!

Just happened to be in Hull this morning at the Royal Infirmary, after my lad cut himself quite deeply yesterday falling against a lightbulb.
And guess what? After all my searching with both Currys themselves and Samsung UK, I walked into Hull St Andrew's Quay Currys and they had one in stock.
Now why couldn't all my searches have found that? Brand new in a sealed box with all security tags complete and unbroken.
So now it's updating.........4 hrs 3 minutes of updates! It's done50 minutes so far......

Get TiVo, Jeff. We're glad we did. Much quicker than the HD box swapped to upstairs, has a decent size hardrive for recording stuff (to get rid of those 20 minutes of adverts) and has features like YouTube etc.
Our TV isn't Smart or 3D, but has a brilliant HD picture through the TiVo box. Negotiate regards the cost....

Sky: overpriced rubbish.
Virgin, same, but I'm with them already.
Have a look at this for a comparison:
France. (Orange France Telecom).
UK, (Virgin).
Line rental: Zero, £15.99.
Internet: 10Mb, 30Mb.
Phone calls: ALL FREE to ALL landlines anywhere. SOME free at certain times, but for extra money.
TV: 160 Channels and 90-odd radio stations. 200 channels and 50 odd radio stations.
Cost: €30, £55.
So a very similar service, but £25 MORE in the UK...and I've been with Virgin nearly 13 years!

Couldn;t get my new Sammy to record onto a USB stick, apparently it doesn't support the format or some **** like that. Bought a 1tb hard drive from currys which works a treat, recording is very easy too.

I think my Panny needs a special recording device that plugs into the USB. Only programs I watch are downloadable online (Lizard Lick Towing and Big Bang Theory) and then I put them on my 32gb Flashdrive/USBstick. I've never seen a program, or film for that matter, anywhere close to 64gb in size.

Our Viera can record on to stick or usb hdd, all specifically formatted.
As far as I can tell,
You can record the programme youre watching .That's it, good if you've beeen called out on an emergency , Otherwise pointless.
Haven't used it much at all

These threads are really good for learning new things. I have had. 42" Samsung for about 5 years, and I've never had to gas it. It's still going strong. We couldn't go any bigger for our standard living room, as any massive TV would strain our eyes and just chavify it. Anyway, what I find interesting is that one can tape programmes on a USB via their plasma? That's really good! I thought one could, but never worked out myself- how. I do have Sky, but I think anything taped on Sky will be lost if I ever get rid of my Sky relay.
I'm gonna investigate if my Samsung has a USB port to it. Thanks.

No, no need. I'm not desperate for a USB port on my TV, nor do I upgrade for mere competition's sake. Smart TV sounds is smarter, like my son's is, but no. Everyone's got a smart one, so I also have to have one whether I direly need it or not- no. I'm happy with my TV for now.

id agree with that, the tv picture quality etc is not a leap forward and probably the same as older tvs, but if you had to buy a new one as i did the features are worth paying a little extra for.

Certainly. I'd pay way extra, if I want something tbh. Not miser, or on a budget or anything. Just that since the kids have left home, we don't watch much TV anyway. So, not really bothered, if you know what I mean.

i did a bit of research into what tv would suit me best and the samsung smart tvs came out the best, only one that has all catch up services, has 3d if you need it but normal tv at every other time and pvr with no extra cost.

I have Sky , but not movies. Signed up to LoveFilm but so far I'm not overly convinced so looked through Sky Movies listings to see if it was worth paying for it instead....... same movie repeated over and over on the same channel ! Think Sky Premiere had "Lincoln" for three days in a row at 9 o'clock , and something else for the next 3 days.

i do, i had sky but got rid,not to do with money, more to do with all the repeats and adverts. id just watch crap for the sake of it or flick channels looking for the four minutes of tv between ocean finance adverts.

We only keep it because the daughter dear enjoys it when she comes back home in her holidays. My cats like Nature programmes on Sky as well.
About 3D, I remember visiting an international science exhibition in 1992 when we lived in London. Japanese whizkids had a futuristic 3D TV on display, in which a screen-size newsreader came out about 4 inches away from the TV screen, and told about the worldwide occurings while pacing up and down. That was amazing to watch, then! Now in this time and age I've had laptops with virtual dancers prancing about at the bottom. They don't exactly come out, but they do look as if they aren't the part of the monitor. So, yeah, 3-D would be great one day.
Thanks for the tips, they'll be useful in future.
