Another Mountain Bike Topic!!
I have a trials bike too.
Start of this yr just managed my first few lurches (you know where you hop forward whilst up on the back wheel), can do about 5/6 under control but not well enough to get onto the egde of stuff to hop off.
Masai frame with maguras and disposable components.
I too seem quite good at falling off

Uncle Buck. If you carry it in a proper cycle case yes. I aleways phone first andn blag it. When a load of us went to Marakesh one of us went first class and took all the bikes as his luggage!!
JackClark:
I too had this for ages. Hopping backwards is what everyone does to start with.
I practiced for hours to back wheel hop on the spot before worring about going forwards. Try to not pull backwards to much when getting the bike up, I kept leaning my body back to hard and the bike follows. Try to get your bike under your body but without leaning your body back too hard. Once you get the hang of this then you are half way there.
The forward hop is done by simply releasing the back brake for a split second and pedaling a 1/4 turn forwards. As soon as you hit the gas the bikes goes up and forward all by itself. Whack the back brake back on as soon as it has moved.
Refinement of this can then follow. I am working to get it under better control now I have the basic movement, but that is the crux of the technique, pull that bike up hard under you without leaning back, hop hop on the spot, then 1/4 stab of power. I will all suddenly happen by itself once you have that stationery hopping sorted.
I reckon I did about 1000000000000 stationary hops before I did my first lurch (well maybe not that many
).
Keep at it. It feels soooooo good when you can suddenly do it, especially if your buddies are still trying!

Glad I'm not the only one.
Love the "lurch" term... think they are actually called pedal-hops!
I found that they started working for me when I realised that you throw your weight forward and only use the unbrake-pedal-brake to 'kick' the bike off to follow under you. The pedaling is just to get the bike moving forwards, it doesn't propel your body, which is, by far, the larger mass.
Unfortunately I had to curtail my trialing activities a fair bit when I had a practicing accident that resulted in a massive surgical reconstruction job on my knee. Funny thing is, i was back out on the bike doing silly things again as soon as i could... which was very shortly after i managed to walk unaided again... ho hum. Still upset that i can't keep pushing it anymore... i miss hopping/jumping into seawalls etc only to hop off them in various cool ways... theres nothing quite like spinning through 360degrees whilst dropping 5 or so feet, landing it smoothly and riding away.

Her at last a pic of "My old favourite" A Kona "EASTON ELITE " "Ah Ha" Bit of Xt/LX crossmax/XT wheels and my all time best fork the SID!!
Please note the "AVID" mec brake........ I am thinking about fitting these to my "Volvo" Cannondale. THEY ARE BETTER than the "Hopes". THis bike has been all over N.Africa and had the pleasure of been shot at in Egypt... Whilst going "Full tilt boogie" down the Valley of the Kings!!!!!I didnt know some nutters had attacked and killed a load of tourists down the road....Had "Guns and Roses" on the walkman and came screaming down from the very top. They could only hear me and all they copuld see was dust... So they panicked and started to shoot..............And I couldnt hear Jack shhit!!!
Anyway... I love this bike.
ANYONE got a workstand for bikes for sale???? Must be a good one.

Can't believe you think the Avid is better than your Hope?!
I have some Avid Arch's on my single speed. Like any canti they are great when setup right. However there is no way I would ever swap back from the Hope C2's on my geared XC bike for cantis :-o

Just got spangly new bike!
Don't go into shock but it is not an MTB
Essentially a road bike, EPX 303 Ltd Ed. Carbon monocoqe (sp) frame and carbon forks. Thing that is different about this baby is the geometry is relaxed i.e. MTB and it has flat bars, well RF low riser and thumb shifters.
Am told this is one of a kind at the moment as EPX dont have it in full production. Compared to better know road bike brands, the price was a steal at under £1000!
This baby flies, I get to work in no time.

VERY nice looking bike. Makes a lot os sense. Yep... The Avids are very good. I find they are so powerfull and plenty of modulation. Also setting them up is easy.If I was touring /in the sticks these are what I would use.
AS most of us have nice bikes lets have a talk about security...... These things get nicked just like your Subaru...........
I believe in a minimum of 2 x "ABUS" or "Kryptonite" type d locks if I am in London and a cable for the sadle/stem.If they cant get the bike they will try the wheels /shocks etc. Remember how easy it is to take off the front forks wheels etc. I always hook a dlock under the fork and on to the frame to stop them dropping the fork out.

My out and about security is simple. I never leave any of my bikes anywhere
If I am not riding it I am sitting next to it in a beer garden etc.
Luckily at work we have a despatch room where we are all allowed to keep our bikes, safe and dry
Our Co. is bike friendly as the big cheese cycles to. He had showers put in especially.

My 2 beasts:
Scott Endorphin - Team Racing, XT/XTR, Rolf Propel Wheels, lots of trickery.
Scott AFD 709 - Alu Frame, carbon fork, full ultegra
Mainly due to Scott being my sponsors that year ;-) I have neither any more :-( boo

ADP What year were you Scott sponsored? Did/do you know J Harvey? I went on a ride with him once when he was nursing a poorly calf. He cranked up the hills in big gears whilst I chased from some distance with eyes bulging and tounge hanging out. Fierce.
I always wanted an Endorphin frame. Have Scott stopped doing them now?

Ah yes my days as a proper riding.
I broke the endorphin(snapped/cracked) Scott dont make them any more, wonder why? Though it was a mega bike -it ruled.
Got into the world of proper degree worthy jobs since, at the time I was working in a bike shop and riding road/mtb/and cyclo cross(ritchey Swiss cross 1 of 2 in the UK, very nice, still have it). Mainly national/regional stuff.
So my sponsors were the shop, Scott, rolf Wheels, some saab garage, um and a few others.
Now? A Gary fisher Supercalibre Easton, pace forks, XT brilliant ally frame.
Now much fatter and slower.
