They use it as a way of checking what you're like as a risk.

If They might only charge extra for convictions in the last 3 years, but if someone had several convictions 4-5 years ago they might not choose to insure that person.

It's about creating a risk profile.

.... also as a broker we deal with 40+ companies. Because some do charge extra for convictions up to 5 years we have to ask when we quote.

Would come in handy.

We currently ask for a copy licence after setting a policy up. It's amazing how many people 'forget' they have convictions.

The insurance company has to show a link between having gone on a SAC, and therefore by definition having been caught exceeding the speed limit but been subsequently rehabilitated, and increased risk over someone who has not been on a SAC. Otherwise it is not a material fact.
