I love regional accents.I live in fear that we may be diluting them with the advent of gansta rap pseudo American accents & words being used.
I think it makes the UK a great place & reflects our history. Also local phrases & sayings are great.

I think we should campaign hard to keep our accents, dialects, phrases & sayings alive.

Who the hell we gonna take the pi** out of if we all spoke proper like what the Queen does?

I got together with a guy at work from Scotland & we tried teaching each other our dialects. I ended up calling his version of a London accent Jockney.

You need to speak the queens English like me . I have struggled to understand people from London at times depending on which part to the city they are.

I agree with what you're saying somewhat though. Problem with migration is that people start to lose their accents, not intentionally mind.

Swissy is a Geordie, you'd never think it if you met him, although I forget from the conversation I had with him how old he was when he moved from the region.

My dad, born and raised here, left the region not long before he was 30. 20 or so years later, maybe more and you wouldn't know he was from up here apart from the odd word or two.

Stop migration, stop the loss of local accents.

That'll never work though, it's supposedly grim Up North.

Shite concrete.

Before they knocked the car park down, I was going to take the Scoob in as some levels were still open. I was scared the Nur Spec would bring it down on top of me though.

One **** accent replaced with another, mind you Eastbenders might be a bit more fun to watch!

I'm guessing half the plebs on here are cockneys then, given the crap I see on here daily.

That is what public school does to you . Still not a proper Geordie like you or Lisa according to my wife

I have lived around the UK in several places and visited a large amount and I am slightly bias but my favourite is Geordie. Don't mind a soft scottish accent but then they probably come from Edinburgh and are not classed as Scottish

But my list of accents I dislike is longer :

Scouse : bloody hate it , does not help I was married once to one
Brummie : they all sound thick and miserable
West country : hilarious to the point that you think they all have tractors at home
Norfolk : can't understand them as they seem to make most words up
Essex: no words needed as they do enough of the talking

And anyone who finishes sentences with ' innit' 'ya know wha I mean ' or any fake gangster style accent.

The black country accent is dying IMO

These days it's now diluted with a Brummy twang which generally sounds more like a drunk slurring their speech. Black country is much faster and shaper spoken with use of its own words for things, as opposed to mispronouncing everything. It's also gaining an Asian/London gangster twang thanks to immigration and popularity of certain urban cultures (innit). That said I know some ethnics speak BC better than I do , but they are the more socially integrated guys as opposed to ones that never venture out of little Bangladesh

I'm included as my accent was honed by my worcestershire teachers whom punished anyone that didn't speak properly - so I have a Worcestershire accent with a hint of black country. But I do know all the words from Ackidock to Stripey Os

I think all English Irish and Scottish accents are great, what I can't stand is when I go to crawley shopping it's like I got on a plane and ended up in some Eastern European country. Oh well, open the doors.

My least favourite accents are the cockney/Essex thing (especially women) and the over exagerated Welsh acent when attached to one of those larger than life 'I'm 101% Welsh and need to let you know I'm not English at every opportunity' type of personalities belonging usually to a slightly rotund bald short man who can't help talking about rugby every 5 minutes! They sound as thick as pigsh1t and in most cases I have come across usually are! Most of the time the Welsh accent is bearable, but these people seem to deliberately overdo it!

Just because LWC owned you f1 you shouldn't feel the need to denigrate the Welsh accent, there are just as many Welsh accents if not more than English.

All the different counties / regions have their own variations and there can be big differences in areas 10 miles apart.

Take Pembrokeshire and Ceredigion for example, Pembrokeshire is known as little England due to a large influx of English for the fishing in the middle ages and Ceredigion which has a deep Welsh accent.

If you go to North Wales then the NW side all sound very Welsh indeed, as Welsh is spoken as the first language in lots of households whereas in the NE area they all sound like plastic Scousers.

I don't mind or dislike anyone's accent personally, it's just people's perceptions of them which can be annoying.

Eh? It has nothing to do with your charlatan pal although now you mention it he is a prime example of the archetypal Welsh 'boyo' bore and I bet he has that stupid accent I am talking about as probably do you which is why you are whining here (probably in that dumb accent if you were to say it rather than write it ).

On an incidental note yeah of course he 'owned' me (whatever that means as I don't do stupid street talk) which is why he no longer posts sh1te all over General. Job done as I pointed out the other day!

I've only met him briefly once, his and my accents are at totally different polar ends as it happens.

My accent is obviously Welsh but totally neutral, I don't have any inflections of any geographical areas in my speech at all.

I know what you mean though about the archetypal bore, it would seem to be the case that all areas have their own version, we can all stereotype things and areas we don't really have much knowledge of.

I mean everyone who lives in Yorkshire wears a flat cap, has a pigeon loft, has a toilet at the end of the garden, owns a whippet and looks like they've just stepped out of Last Of The Summer Wine don't they?

And how do you know what areas I have knowledge of? My dislike of that particular accent comes from the misery of working in South Wales for a couple of years in my 20s.... thankfully a chapter of my life I think little about these days. When I made my comment earlier it was that to which I was referring, I hadn't even thought of your pal, but seeing as you brought it up...

Ah, so the nasty Welsh people picked on you?

Now it all becomes apparent , but South Wales as in the areas between Swansea and Newport does not comprise of the whole of Wales.

You missed out on all the best areas.

Not at all, they were perfectly pleasant, I just find the accent I mentioned annoying and the place pretty depressing! I don't care whether it's right or wrong, it is just how I feel about it!

No and nowhere did I say it did or that I dislike all Welsh accents, just the one I mentioned.

I think maybe instead of getting automatically overly defensive you'd do well to read what I write before commenting

Better still don't bother commenting as I won't be changing my mind any time soon!

I'm not being defensive in the slightest despite what you believe.

I've read what you've posted and just posted on that, you mentioned Welsh accent and did not state which Welsh accent or area you were specifically referring to.

So from this I deduced that you were referring to Wales as a whole, it would be like me stating that all English people speak like they are from Essex.

But I will agree with you 100% that certain areas of South Wales the people do sound miserable and are so negative to the point of depression, but having seen some of the areas it's not surprising.
