That's really think I wll order a set if Raditor hoses for my Greenwagon for its late Xmas present

Do most people actually replace their hoses after 10/12 years because I haven't read of many that seem to do so. ?

Electro chemical degradation happens when the coolant mixture reacts with the different metals in the engine to form a galvanic cell and become charged. It discharges itself through the hoses (which are made of a lot of things as well as rubber) and weakens them usually at the highest point.
This is the correct answer.

It's the reason why Brembos, for example, have a habit of corroding themselves and their fastening bolts into an immovable mess: the Brembo caliper is alloy, the bolt, steal, and salt water or just dirty water off the road makes little electro-chemical cells around each bolt, which acclerate the corrosion.

Yep

Not sure why there is even debate about it here (well I am actually as YKW is involved ), it's well known in the automotive industry as Paddy more or less said.

Yes, very interesting.

Very comprehensive as well.

It's bad enough worrying about external degradation, let alone what thermal, electro and chemical degradation's eating at the heart of the thing !

Well that escalated quickly...

Back on topic, its the top rad hose that's gone, being chaned now and a coolant flush, which saves me a job as I was going to do the coolant anyway!

I reckon anyone who gets a pinhole in one is dead lucky.

The alternative is a massive failure on a fast road......

On the Brembo side, found out that if you use a silicone based anti seize agent, not copper slip then you don't have the issue with the bolt seize due to the conductivity with the different metals and road salt/dirt etc.

Will find the name of the product I used, was reccomeded to me by someone in "The Know"

Yep, well that's what happened. I was in N. Wales and the temp gauge went up. Opened the bonnet to see a nice little jet of water coming out of a small hole in he top hose. Taped it up with electrical tape and filled the coolant up as best I could from a bottle of spring water in the car. Made it the 5 miles to the garage down the road whereupon opneing the bonnet said pinhole was a gash in the hose and the car had to be recovered home to Lancs via the AA.

Presumably due to people who think more of using others' threads to proliferate their animosity to fellow SN members than helping those who need it.

Anyway, glad you've got it sorted and that you've got more than just a repair.

I was really lucky: I got clouds of steam less than 200 yards from home. Pulled over, had a look, nowt, temperature OK.....

Drove home. As I arrived, MORE steam, jumped out, almost threw the bonnet up and just caught the tail end of a tiny fountain from the top hose, striking the front of the block and running down onto the headers. It stopped as I watched it.

Sorted it same day.

The joys of car ownership LOL I love that feeling of opening the bonnet and hoping what you are about find is not too bad

I'm standing at 1-1 on that.

My pinhole find, against finding the bearings gone a year earlier

Picked the car up tonight, as I had suspected it had the wrong coolant in previously so top rad hose replaced and coolant flushed through with correct stuff. One lovely drive home despite catching some bad traffic.
