How to make a Fast Road WRX ?
#61
I had a WRX for 3 years and the brakes are poo under pressure and cook in 5 minutes hard braking..
Spend £1000 on brakes and £1000 on turbo and remap
Or just buy an Sti... I toyed with spending £4k on my WRX to do it properly (emphasis on that) but decided to spend that on a proper Subaru...
Your choice...but watch those butter brakes chap

To be honest I've only just got it . Haven't even put 50 miles on it yet, but will take all your words for it (brakes are rubbish, I get it!).
So basically the answer to making a fast road WRX is, sell it and buy an STI!

Get Duncan at RaceDynamix to map it and get a set of Brembo's off MattyBR5... will be like a rocket and stop well!
I loved my WRX and the ride was so smooth..I fitted KYB Ultra SR shocks from an STi (from Eurocar parts) to the rear and it handled sweet
Happy new WRX !

I bought my WRX already tuned to 276bhp, brake discs and pads uprated, coilovers . The money I've spent on it are visual mods .
Now I'm 22 years old and have only have had 7 cars ranging from Corsa VXR to BMW z4 and I would still say I'm a pretty poo driver, I mean how good can a 22 year old actually be??
However I think you'd have to spend an awful lot of money to find a car to keep up on a b-road ( correct me if I'm wrong) , this making it a fast road car to me. It's still no STi though, if the guy who owned my WRX before me had spent his dollar on an STi he would have had a much much more capable car.

The op dude just wants to mildly tune his wrx to make it a bit quicker, better all round fast street car, think he was after 330hp.now! this is easily achievable on a wrx and many have made this figure and more..now if he 400-450hp then the sti would make real sense but now some stis are over 10 years old and are not what they used to be due to the mileage, modifications, many owners etc and do have engine, suspension and gearbox problems of their own.

Newage WRX can be a fast car and take 360 nicely, maybe more as it's mainly STI owners lowering the figures for everything WRX related. Also a TD04 or cheap TDO5 laughs in the face of anti-lag, so that could be another thing to consider ...and a TDO4 doesn't max out at 270, with decent supporting mods 300 is possible and you'll have a very fast spooling road car.
Every progress thread I seem to read about newage STI's running over 400 involves heartache. 400bhp into 2 litres will put a lot of strain on the weakest component, which could domino.
People mainly mod because it's fun to progress, then in the next breath they tell you to buy an STI so you don't have to! Also if something fails on the WRX it's usually far far far cheaper to replace! So you have better piece of mind when you are hitting the red line!

I owned a wrx and upped power by fitting ppp, fitted front brembo sti brakes and a white line rear anti rollbar, was a very good car at this level, when I wanted more I started collecting bits but changed my mind and bought a widetrack jdm sti, it was cheaper in the longrun and I have a much better base to go further if I get the need. Wrx is a very good car at ppp level but if you want more just bite the bullet and change it I have been where you are and I know I made the right decision.

As much as I love my WRX, I 'm well aware of it 's limitations within a sensible budget. I'll go for a combo of STi and PPP upgrades but much beyond that I 'm into "just buy an STi" territory. Mine's a daily hack so I prefer it to be a bit softer around the edges. When the time comes for a new toy I'll go for an STi as it makes more sense.

the pink sti stickers add 50bhp alone!
A good geo setup, front and rear roll bars and springs will make a great road car, my wrx runs close to 500bhp and the standard setup worked well with my very last mod being Ohlins to finish off the package.
Good set of Ap brakes and you would have a very quick A-B

All we keep hearing is BRAKES..BLAH BLAH,,,
I have had quite a few impreza's now in the 350bhp ball park, If it's only going to be a road car then imho 4 pot calliper's with good pads and discs are more than capable for road use. I am currently running a K sport 8 pot set up with bluestuff pads and to be fair i don't feel any difference, Maybe if it was for track use then yes they will come into there own
Getting a blob wrx to 350bhp will require the following.
Full decat/sports cat
STI pink injectors
High flow Panel filter
STI tmic
Uprated fuel pump
Re map
And a capable turbo, The above can be sourced inc map for roughly £900, Turbos vary in price, vf34 £300+, vf35 £250 ish and the best bang for buck turbo in this range is the TD05 converted to front entry £120 ish. So in theory it will be £900ish plus the turbo imho

I did full revolution cat back exhaust. Changed plugs and fuel pump, then bob Rawle pushed the td04 to 291bhp and 371lb of torque. Which I am well pleased with. Next is brakes n suspension, then turbo and remap.

I had a sti version 3 a while back but it was brutal to drive 80 mile round trip 6 days a week, I have an e30 325i sport, running a e36 3 litre m3 engine not far off 290 bhp in a car that weighs around 1100kg no traction control :-) with h and r coil overs uprated LSD 5 stud conversion from e30 m3 is next to be fitted

I don't even think there is a need for comparison, imo they are for totally different things.
For running the kids around, throwing the dogs in the back my WRX wagon is perfect.
Weekend / track day toy? STI

Sorry to hijack this thread but as there seems a lot of people in here you have better knowledge than me and my question is semi related.
I have a 2003 WRX which my wife uses as a daily. She's a total petrolhead but not after lots of power or handling. She just loves Scooby's. It currently has Eibachs, Afterburner Raptor exhaust, decat and a panel filter. I was going to get it remapped for her just so the car can benefit from the mods and to fix the EML light coming on because of the decat. I imagine it will make 260bhp with a remap. Before I do, is it wise to upgrade to the Waldo fuel pump as suggested above or not really worth doing with the mods and power the car will make after the remap? Like I say, not chasing power but more a case of looking after the car and wondering if the fuel pump should be changed as a precaution.
Secondly, as we are all talking about brakes, my 2003 WRX has red Brembo calipers. Is this standard or has the previous owner upgraded to them?
