An observation when it comes to mapper recommendations.
You'll see plenty of examples on the forums of chaps bigging up their mapper like this..
"He's a really nice bloke!" or "He's a really really nice bloke!" or even, "He's a lovely lovely guy and I'd like to bear his child!!" Well, of course he is, he's sat in your car poking away at his laptop and about to relieve you of £100's. He's going to be utterly charming, and agreeing with everything you say isn't he?
Personally, I'd rather a grumpy old Bast--d who knew what he was doing, than a "Sweet young man" who knows F-all....
Luckily enough, I don't do the mapping, as I'm a damn sight grumpier than Martyn, who is neither young, nor sweet..

Hi Jim, did you by any chance recently move from Rugby?
As others have said you'll be lucky to get more than 350bhp on your current turbo. This has been proved time and time again. Some well respected mappers have already replied to your question.
Also a very valid point someone made is the other upgrades you will need. I have spent the same again upgrading other bits like brakes and suspension to cope with the uprated 334bhp power I now have. In hinesight I should have started with an STI. Would have been MUCH MUCH cheaper in the long run.
Also, no chance your frozen box will hold 400bhp for long i'd say with confidence!
Anyhow, good luck to you.

No, your interpretation is erronous. I indicated that just because somebody is "nice" it doesn't necessarily follow that they can map a car! If you go read a few eulogies you'll see what I'm on about.

Not at all. I think 99% of the people that read it will take it the way I did. Almost every post you make is of the same nature and it's quite pathetic that a so called established tuner acts this way.

To be fair I understood his post. Lots of people who can talk the talk, tell you what you want to hear, impress you during the map with all this extra power, but in reality, three days later, pop.
He's not saying people aren't good if they're nice, just that nice doesn't mean good. The same goes for grumpy.

I can't see anything wrong in pointing out what should be obvious, ie the guy is there to tune your car and that is all. The way he does his job is what's important, rather than his bedside manner. Put it this way, I treat my customers like adults, rather than suckers.

Ashley at wilks engines. He's not a big garage but has been building engines since the 70s and subaru engines for over 10yrs now! He will put/fit any makes/brands you want, but he will tell you if he doesn't think its worth it or necessary. Originally he suggested rebuilding with normal sti internals instead of doing a standard wrx rebuild,he said it would be good for 400bhp. I told him I want to run power close to that so therefore wouldnt be strong enough. So then he got hold of some bits from a special edition sti (one that is 300-400bhp standard, like the cosworth one) done a few other things and guarantees it good for 500bhp now.

Good luck with your guarantee, I fear it won't be worth the paper it's probably not written on.
The Cosworth STI is a 2.5, and there are no 400bhp 2.0l cars out of the factory, special edition or not.
Newage 2.0l STI's will cope with 400, but, for how long.

I specifically worry about a couple of the more recent laptop jockeys with an IT background who have had very little actual experience of working on cars. There's often something missing, and it shows. I'd say by far the best results are from those mappers who work closely with properly established garage style tuners and dyno owners.
The reason I say this concerns the frequency with which cars come in that need a fair amount of work before they can be set up. It's rare for an Impreza to come in, and all we're doing is mapping it. Invariably we have to fix something first, and a lot of it isn't a roadside repair. It's just that life is a damn sight easier when you have a workshop, ramp, staff etc at your disposal.

All I know is the guy will fix it if it brakes at any less than 500bhp. Like I say the original build he was going to do he would warranty it to 400bhp.I said I want more reliability than that so he went back to the drawing board, sourced some better bits and said it would be able to take 500bhp if I wanted. I fully trust this guy and know he is good for his word with the warranty.

True, my point was that you can also be "friendly" without knowing what you're doing. The majority of the feedback on mappers I've been reading on here concerns their character and not the content of the actual work.
