I'm a bit confused about the older iPads. I have just bought the Air and about to sell my old one. Problem is I'm not sure what 'number' it is. It was the first retina display screen. Is that the iPad 3? If so, what was the 4? The mini? My head hurts!

Was that the only difference Jack? When was the 4 released then? I'm assuming the air is version 5?

It wasn't called the 4, that's just what people called it, it was a minor update to bring the charging cable into line with the iPhone 5. The Air is the iPad Air, no official number but it is the 5th variant of the iPad.

It's the Apple way, always has been. Don't see why it's an issue though.

This guys first comment sums it up. "Apple don't use micro USB because micro USB is ****"
He then gives a good list of reasons why, but if you've ever plugged in a Micro USB plug, then plugged in a lightning connector it's obvious.

Ifixit has stripped down the latest ipad and discovered it has a tiny battery.

Correct, you have to hand it to Apple, getting more from lower numbers while others just keep getting bigger.

Isn't the obvious answer to minimise the need for a connector at all and use wireless charging?

Yes that is the obvious answer and obviously a bit rubbish when you want to plug something in.

Limited uptake and consequently superseded by Thunderbolt iirc. There were none Apple machines that used FireWire but there weren't many. That and USB basically got there first (I.e. became the standard fit item).

I think I've bought one Apple cable since the original iPod. Can't say that I feel too ripped off personally.

Yes, good idea, I can imagine the lashing these idiots would get if they posted their anti-apple conspiritard bull**** on a pro-apple web site.
Emmaroids - lovely name by the way, you're parents are comedy geniuses, must have been tricky growing up.

Not quite a minor update. The CPU also changed from the A5X to the A6X from the IPad 3 to the IPad 4 as well, which the Iphone 5 had at the time.

The P*ss take came when the IPad 3 was launched back in March 2012 and then by November 2012 the Ipad 4 was then launched at the sametime as the 1st gen Ipad Mini.

Oops, way more than a cable connector, camera and all sorts. Yes that's a short time, very Samsung like, at least they didn't drop support for the replaced device eh.

First opinions are it won't be easy to repair due to the construction method.

The London opening event was a damp squib with only a few diehards there, but quickly disappeared and the shelves were full of stock.

I'm determined to get at least 5 years out of a laptop, for a tablet I'm thinking the same. You could go broke keeping up with Apple.
