I emailed fancy plates with a custom request, basically just specified that the plate had to be legal with a minimum 11mm border with the relevant stamp/postcode etc.

FFS why not just put a proper sized plate on and stop worrying about it! This is like a VTA DV for me, a complete waste of time that adds nothing and just brings hassle! At the end of the day does it really make the car any better ... no it doesn't! You are already driving around in a chavtastic police magnet, why draw attention to yourselves any further?

OR if you really want to be clever, buy a proper jdm one and then it is legal to have small plates, like mine :P

Et voilà

Because of this:

The size of the plate is NOT defined, it's the sizing and spacing of the lettering and borders which is.

This is the smallest you can legally have a 7 digit plate, if I had fewer letters - the plate could legally be smaller - just like P7 YTT plate above.
And all the op, imo, was trying to find out was if they could have a smaller sized number plate but still be legal, and I think a number of helpful members have shown that the op can.

When was your car imported? If it was after 1st September 2001 then your numberplate should be standard UK size, not bike size. OR if you have replaced the plate since then the replacement should be standard UK size. It may be that you are also breaking the law now.

Of course, that's if you follow the letter of the law and it's going to be impossible for any Mr Plod to check or enforce. Generally speaking I wouldn't worry too much.

Interesting read the guidelines:

Exactly, a number of members have pointed out what they have done and that they have never had an issue with the police. This does not make their interpretation of the law right.

The law is, as usual, unclear about this and what may be acceptable to one officer may not be to another. At the end of the day why take the chance when you are already driving a car the police in general don't like (with some justification given the way some are driven)?

It seems inherently stupid to do something that adds nothing to your car in real terms and yet may gain you the attentuon of the law!

Yep, this is why mine isnt blue, doesnt have gay gold alloys and doesnt have a spoiler, trying to keep it as stealthy and unassuming as possible so that i dont get heaved in with the blue, gold and table top spoiler brigade.

Even down to equal length headers and tryiing to keep it quiet!

Yep, but that is because you will be someone who enjoys the driving pleasure it gives you and doesn't want to join the 'look at me' brigade

If Subaru's were meant to be un-noticed they would have plain wheels, no spoiler, quiet exhausts and boring drivers.

IMHO The driving of the car attracts more attention than the car itself. I've never been pulled in mine, even with it's large spoiler, small (LEGAL) numberplate, big wheels, loud exhaust, HKS dump valve etc etc. I was pulled in the wifes RX8 doing the speed limit when I overtook someone doing 30 in a 60. I got points. Go figure!

Sorry F1 fan, I have one too but it is owund right down with a boost controller so it only dumps on high boost, as I dont want 2.1^bar of boost going back through my turbine! And it is faced down at the bulhead to try and smother the noise somewhat

Had my car mapped with it on. Personal choice, love the SSQV. Fully aware of the problems with them.

You telling me your car is 100% standard as it left the factory???????

Nope, but these days mine is a Merc and doesn't have a dump valve thank goodness

When I had a Scoob it was lightly modded, but no silly VTA DV! It made enough noise actually doing something without the need to add more for no good reason!

Haha, then it would require another map, and to be honest I dont want a horrible unsightly length of pipe running across my engine bay, and also dont see a way of connecting it into my inlet pipe

I say again, it's all personal choice. No right or wrong if you do it right and it's doing no damage to the engine! Lets not get back into the VTA DV threads posted daily on this site. I don't wish for an arguement here.

I'm sure there will be something you have put on your car that I don't like (Like a Merc badge) but it's all personal at the end of the day, that's your choice and i'm not going to bang on about it!

But a Merc badge doesn't make a stupid noise or get me pulled by the cops.... point taken though

Personally I would highly recommend Craigsplates.

I have used them about 5 times over the last couple of years and they have been brilliant.
