Agreed - as with so much in life, it's people that are the problem, it's just unfortunate that the minority can spoil what the majority enjoy.
btw - here is a pic of the mutts!

Paul, he's gorgeous
Another Boxer, I take it?
Were you at the show on Saturday? There was a Rottie show on Sunday in Niddrie, you should have come to that as well.
Take no notice of Sti go fast - he's a dog hater
For names, how about Lennox..LOL...
DP,
That is one gorgeous Rottie Bet the Spaniel is boss...lol...
Ours is very dark, so her facial markings don't come out so well in the pictures.
Sal,
Grizzly looks, well, Grizzly
Scooby is so cute though.
Mike (RB170)
Ours came from a breeder in Fife, a bit far from you I think.
If you want one, read up about the breed, find out about local Rottie shows and go meet some owners/breeders, thats the best way.
www.rottweiler.co.uk is a start.

Been thinking.
The film "The Omen" has a lot to bloody answer for
Such a shame that one film can spawn (excuse the pun) such a reputation.

Heard a story that the dogs gave the stuntmen a real hard time cos no matter how much padding they wore the dogs could always find a way through! hehe Who'd be a stuntman?...........
I don't think the movie helped but a bigger problem is the way the press reports these unfortunate attack stories. As soon as you mention that you have rottweilers then the first question is nearly always 'Oh, have they bitten anybody or are they really dangerous?'. Really ***** me off no-end.
Thanks for the compliments about Sam and yep, the springer rules the roost!!

I think the media has a lot to answer for full stop. Why do certain dogs have a reputation? - Through ill-informed and sensationalistic reporting in many cases. As a direct result of the tabloids trying to sell a few more copies of their crap papers we ended up with Dangerous Dogs Act a few years ago - a complete waste of time that was drafted in record time as a direct knee-jerk reaction to the media's reporting of certain events.
Scooby is still only 8 months old, but she is being trained, is well looked after, properly fed and exercised. A happy and contented dog WILL NOT do the things that you see reported in some of the papers. The guy who bred the mastif / staff cross needs locking up as there can be only one reason why this was done.

Agree totally.
Time to start hitting the dodgy breeders and owners really hard.
Make life easier for the rest of us
LOL...it should be an offence to behave in a "macho" manner while being in charge of a dog
Think you all know what I mean...LOL...

whilst it could be the way a dog is brought up by its owner that causes problems (and I know tha kind or people you mean), its not always the case.
When I was a kid (about 6) we were staying with one of my old man's friends and he owned a beautiful collie.
One morning it went for my face (and got it), then clamped onto my arm until they managed to get it off (I saw my bone through the holes!).
The owner was a nice bloke, defo not a lout etc. and treated the dog very well. I got away with a bloody face, a sling and some great puncture scars on both sides of my arm in the shape of a dogs mouth! which are still there and look kinda cool!! :-|
Anyway, a couple of years later she went for her owner too and he had to have her put down.
Just don't think because your dog is nice and friendly it couldn't one day just lose the plot and attack and maim. It can happen.
I love dogs but prefer my independant cats

I agree its the owner not the dog !
In all my years of walking my dog, I have never had a sniffter of trouble from any Rotty or Doberman, but I have a major problem with Alsatians ( horrid dogs - think they are well hard and like to bully my dog ), really gets on my t1ts when owners of dogs who have attitude problems have them off the lead to start on my dog, I have had so many near punch ups with the owners over this. arseholes !

Actually love dogs and would have one if I weren't out all day.
Cats themselves are fine in moderation . I *do* resent the attitude of cat owners who believe because their pet is independant, cute and cuddly we should all take the same pleasure in cleaning cat sh*t from our gardens.
I'm sure as a fanatical() dog lover yourself you take the reasonable and these day quite common steps of a) ensuring your dog is accompanied at all times its outside your house/garden and b) if it defecates in a public place you clean up after it. (actually thats the other reason I dont have a dog - all that messing about with poly bags )
Hate Mice
Would shoot rats given a chance
Pretty ambivalent about fish
Birds are fine so long as they're not nesting in my loft.
Horses scare me (especially qwerty's )
Love the taste of Cow, Pig and Sheep

Deano,
I can happily state that my Rottie is accompanied, and indeed physically attached to me/wife at all times when outside the home.
This is of course for her safety
Joke on:
Should she happen to eat an unaccompanied and/or untethered child, however, then thats the child's own lookout
Joke off
She is only ever off the lead outside the home when there is no one else around (except family or friends and their dogs who know her) and away from traffic, trains, and other dangers.
And yeah, we always clear up after her. Unlike some less responsible owners...

dsmith,
well I semi agree with you. They do sometimes sh*t outside of our garden, but I've only ever seen em do it on the people over the road's garden who always park their cars blocking access to our drive instead of bothering to park on their own drive, so I figure thats fair do's. :-)
Most of the time they dig a good sized hole then do it in our garden then spend 10 minutes covering it up
When I say independent though I mean their lives do not revolve around me being there to provide company and entertainment 24 hours a day.

Expanding on my other posts: It is not the dog but the owner AND THE BREEDER that make dangerous dogs. Juan, it may have been the case that other dogs in the breeding line have had a tendancy to show an aggressive side. If this was the case the dog should never have been used for breeding. As hard as it is, when this dog attacked you it should have been destroyed ASAP irrispective of how the dog has acted in the past then any further attacks would have been prevented.(were you afraid of dogs thereafter?)
ChrisL, well said. This guy was aiming to do one thing...breed a HARD dog ! AR$E !!!

I went looking around for a pup over the weekend and I have to say I was appalled.
I went to one place and they had 8 rottie pups in a 2 x 4 foot cage, which was absolutely filthy and they wanted £799 each for them. I complained to the staff and was asked to leave.
I went to another place that wanted £1000 for a rottie pup but couldn't produce the paper work when I asked and couldn't confirm parents, hip scores or anything.
Some help needed please, I want a Rottie but I'm not prepared to pay through the nose for something that's going to chew my leather sofa to bits. I've left messages for a couple of Breeders but there must be something in my voice cos none of them have called me back.
Can you give me a telephone number or email address of a good kennel/breeder who's not looking to rip me off and who does actually want to sell me a puppy.
Cheers
Mike

Go on this web site and leave a message for Rottie pups www.rottweiler.co.uk or www.the3rtclub.co.uk
BTW £1000 for a Rot is alot they normally range from £400-£700+ and make sure the hip score(mother+father) is LOW well under 13

try looking on the kennel club site. Look at the show results in your area. Rule of thumb says that if they show good dogs then they breed good dogs and they are careful when it comes to using good stock as they have the best intentions for the breed be it hips or temprement.

Mike,
as a rule of thumb, stay clear of anywhere that
a) has to advertise in the papers (unless you are very sure of them) or
b) has puppies available immediately.
Usually these are not "proper" breeders, but private individuals who dabble or puppy farms. Most quality dogs are, in effect, pre sold. Kinda like cars...LOL...
Please, please report the so called "breeders" who had the pups in a 2 by 4 filthy cage to the RSPCA as soon as you can.
Once you find a good breeder, you will probably have to put your name down for the next available litter.

RB170, please inform the RSPCA about that breeder. Or if you'd prefer not to then let me have the details so I can.
ANY puppy has the potential to chew, when it gets bored!
Going back to the original post there are people how see their dog as an aggression accessory. They want people to be frightened of them and a nasty dog helps (they are usually inadequate in bed, unemployed and take drugs too). Others end up with nasty dogs without meaning to because they got it from a mate who had a mate who had a pup that wouldn't fight.
Anyone wanting a dog simply as a pet could do worse than pay a visit to their local dogs home. Take one you like for a few walks and if you click give the staff a good grilling about it's history and behaviour before you decide. You won't get much pedigree but alot of the mixed mutts are less highly strung than pure-breds and make good pets.

I agree. We unfotunately lost our last dog to a tumour and aged 12 he had to be put down. He was a Border Terrier and as he was such a lovely dog, we decided to get another of the breed.
We rang the people from whom we had got Rocky (Not after the Stallone films - it was his pedigree name from his great-great grandfather! ) who now does not breed them, but she put us in touch with someone she recommended.
When we rang the lady up she already had one litter but they were all taken. However, she invited us down to view this litter, the parents and, I think, to get a general feel for us, as potential dog owners. We took down photos of Rocky and saw the set-up and we were very impressed. We put our names down for one from the next litter.
When this litter was born, we were invited down to look at the puppies and to pick one out. An incredibly hard choice and we went back 2 further times to see "our" puppy once we had made the decision.
This breeder also has a policy of registering the dog before you take it and will take dogs back up to 6 months after you collect them and bitches at any time, if you can't get on with the dog. The set-up was good, we could view papers going back as far as we liked, the parents were about for us to see the nature and she also gave us contact numbers of others who now had her dogs so that we could get an idea of the temperament. She also asked us to send photos of the puppy as he progressed. All in all, it made us feel very comfortable taking a dog from her.
We've had Bruno just over a year now and he's a lovely dog. Sure, he has the potential to bite, I have the potential to strangle someone too, but I'm not going to cut off my hands to make sure that I don't...
