A lot of the benefits of Android come from it being open source and hence more flexible/customisable. That being said how ever, from your comments on the iPhone I'm not sure that that'll be any advantage to you.
Tbh if your happy with the iPhone and like the what it does for you, then there's no point in changing platforms for the sake of it.

I just wanted to be sure I wasn't "missing out" I suspect.

John - That is one of my current "niggles" with my 4. It tends to lag at times. Although I appreciate the 4S is quite a performance upgrade, the 5 even more so and the 5S should fly me to the moon and back.

It never used to feel slow, like the iPad 1, but both are now only borderline usable, the iPad crashes a lot, newer iOS upgrades make things worse and it still won't let you manually change the voicemail shortcut number.

I think it comes down to the front end.
I had the iPhone 3,3gs and thought the simplicity of it was great just had too many network issues with replacement handsets so it put me off signing another 18 months if I went for the iPhone 4. So switched to HTC. The Front end to start with seemed a pain in the **** but you become custom to it. It used to crash, lock up so another handset bites the dust.
Now on an s3 and I can't fault it. Front end is clean, handset has been rock solid. just an upgrade is due and I'm not sure if it's worth upgrading. The nexus 5 intrigues me as I have a nexus 7 tablet and I like how Google and it's joint accounts all link on various devices but you get that with Apple.
Unfortunately most handsets are in the race to have the biggest screen and that's what puts me off the latest range of phones. In day to day use I very much doubt the average user can tell or really see the difference in the latest handsets processing power, graphics application, etc and hence my first line, imo it's down to the front end and what you're used to or prefer.
Everyone handset with have its niggles and what you gain in one area you will loose on another. If you like the 4 I would suggest sticking with and getting the 5s

If you want the fastest phone then the Galaxy Note 3 (LTE) with Adreno 330 is king of the hill. Quad Core 2.3 ghz, 15% faster Graphics than the iphone 5s, it really is a monster in terms of performance and a genuine 1080p display.
Snapdragon 800 chipset is the one to beat right now, Same with the Sony Xperia Z Ultra, but that is mahoosive.
If you text a lot then the keyboard on the Note is superb as it has an extra row of keys for the numbers. Proper Multi Tasking with Split Screen view (try that on a paltry iphone screen) and with Mans hands it really isn't Dom Joly either.

Like someone said previously, only you can make the choice. Go to somewhere like Carphone warehouse and try them all out and see which one feels best.
I'm not a phone fanboy, to me a phone is just a phone. Ive owned the iphone previously and it was ok, no more than that though as its a bit restrictive. You can't upgrade the memory as it has no memory expansion card slot, you can't change the battery which in this day and age of heavy useage and i think is a mistake from apple.
Ive got the Samsung galaxy S3 at the min and its a great phone, it has a nice big clear screen with vibrant colours which is easy to see in natural daylight, you can expand the memory via the memory card slot. The big plus for me is you can change the battery in seconds, i do long train trips occasionally so i have pre loaded films and use the internet quite a bit so having a back up battery is a big plus and with them being tiny you don't even notice them in your pocket.
I also prefer the Android OS to Apples IOS, Android feels slick and great to use, IOS just feels a bit bland and dated in comparison.
