House of Cards new season.

I must say I prefer Homeland to the House of Cards with two pretentious characters trying to tell us all what we already know. I can't wait for Homeland's new season to come out. When I told my kid (away atm) that I had completed watching all available seasons of Homeland, she said "Homeland is 'sick'!!!" in a good way.

A mate told me to watch Sense8. I liked the idea behind it but I wasn't impressed with the first episode. Maybe I should watch another episode before I bin it.

I'm up to date one Homeland. Sense8 grabbed me on the first one, but couldn't get into any further episodes so dropped it. Lie-to-me also seemed unique, but again doesn't do it for me, 4 episodes in it's the same but regurgitated. I've literally just started watching Bates-Motel, this seems quite good, a modern twist on Phyco.

All of the series shown are padded out - except The Sopranos .
Absolutely different class to anything that has ever been produced.
Ray Donovan has substance also .

Walking Dead has gone downhill this last two series - too slow not enough action.

Have just binge watched Sons of Anarchy and love it. Probably the most violent thing I have watched on TV and Series 7 does kinda go OTT but overall very enjoyable viewing with great characters.

Its not new but I love Entourage. Watched every episode again prior to watching the movie and there isn't a bad one. I think I must be on my own with that show though lol.

I also still watch the US reality show Survivor. Just watching series 31.

Have never got into the Sopranos but tbh haven't watched it from the start. Jamie Lynn Sigler was in Entourage (as herself) for quite a few episodes.

Yes GAme of thrones is great

man in the high castle, good production values - slightly disappointed though

Seems to end rather abruptly (and a bit of a cop out ending)

Just had 24 take over my life, apart from the odd tv show I just binge watched 9 seasons of it. It was really good that's why I wasted my life watching it . I have since got into The Blacklist and Blindspot.

Laugh away but what exactly is a box set and can I get these on-line? Is it a physical disc or something to downloead? If downloaded do I store on my laptop hard drive or can it go on a DVD on my drive? What is a typical size?

I have a slowish but reasonable laptop and a fairly modern slimline TV which I think has a DVD/CD drive.

I don't know many of the films on the list but like drama/court room stuff. No comedy or soppy kids or sci-fi. Suggestions? Is Happy Valley any good (TV series)?

Advice welcomed. Cheere, David

David, box set means a serial drama with a season or a number of seasons.

Download Netflix for £7.99 and away you go. You can do the same via Amazon and other places as well. If you have Sky, and if your Sky box is connected to your Sky broadband router, you can watch many box sets on Sky On Demand as well, I'm told.

I have Netflix, and I think it's a good value for £7.99 a month. I've watched the best stuff on it already, but they keep bringing in new things, so I'm keeping it for now.

Watch Breaking Bad and Homeland on Netflix. IMO best two dramas so far. One is on a family life getting wrecked and other one is political. House of Cards is also brill.

I've started a courtroom drama 'The Good Wife'. It's kinda so-so, so far. I've watched 5 episodes by now.

imv - "Box Set" refers more to a way of consuming TV series than any physical product

it suggests the ability to watch multiple episodes in one sitting rather than the enforced wait - until the next one was released

it got its name from box sets of DVD's containing all the episodes that the TV/Production companies released after the program had aired on TV - like 24, or Band of Brothers

but now streaming services like Netflix, when they produce a new series, tend to release the entire series in one go

you can watch the whole thing in one go - or 2, 3 or 4 in an evening, it puts you in control

To add:

FAO David,

Download Netflix via internet on your laptop. Just Google Netflix.com. Then once downloaded, whenever you want to watch a film or a series from Netflx, you can attach it to your TV, if yours isn't a Smart TV. You can buy an hdmi lead at Currys or even at Tesco to attach your laptop to your TV. Your modern TV must have an hdmi port to it. Then you can adjust the source with your TV remote control until your laptop screen's stuff becomes visible on your TV. Then you can press 'play' on your laptop, on whatever you want to watch, and watch it on your TV.

For the me The Shield was my first box set and will always be one of my all time favourites. I also love GOT, Breaking Bad, House of Cards and Homeland. I tried the first couple of episodes of SOA and it just didn't hook me.

Here is a couple of alternative suggestions:

The Big C
True Detective (intense but worth sticking with)

Additionally, some type of video player software is required for optimal display .
Something like potplayer + MADVR + LAV filters.
All are available as a free download.

Rob, I didn't have to download any of them in addition. It was simple to watch Netflix stuff on my TV, even when it's 7-8 years old non-Smart plasma.

What burnt hole in my handbag was that 'HDMI to Apple' cable. That stupid little cable is 40 quid! Apple do charge too much for everything they make.

I can't wait for the new season of Homeland. I felt the slump after the 3rd season finished. I won't detail it because I don't want to ruin it for the ones that haven't watched it yet. The disposal in the sea (again, not going to detail it) was one of the most effective scenes I've seen on the screen; big or small. That Carrie character is a great actress! I think the Brody character ended up getting awards for his performance but I think Carrie is the soul of the show. Not just because she's the lead, it's because she's so natural!

Bosch on Amazon prime, based on the Michael Connelly US detective books. 2nd series just released, excellent casting and production. Each series is based on single book, 2 down, just another 20 for them to convert to the screen.
