I've got it narrowed down to the boot hinge itself now. If I lay in the boot with the lid shut, and grab hold of the 'L' shaped strut on the passenger side, I can shake it up and down and replicate the sound. There's nothing loose either side of it, so either the metal in the parcel shelf is flexing and causing the sound, or the hinge itself is slightly loose.
No idea what to do about it, it doesn't look servicable at all as the hinge bolts are welded into the shelf!
I took the seatbelt reels out from both corners, put felt tape on the metal prongs that go into the car body, thought I got rid of but its back with a vengence
Now there's rattles from the front too
Why did subaru not pay any attention to rattles

Did any of you find a cure to this boot hinge rattle?
My car has started doing the same over bumps in the left hand rear parcel shelf area.
I've removed the whole rear interior and the noise is definitely coming from the boot hinge or the metal panels it's fixed to.

Presume this isn't a Classic, so ignore me if it is, but I've just solved this rattle from the boot on the wagon! :-
The cables that run across from the n/s/r to the boot lock mechanism run between the inner and outer skin of the tailgate. When they slip they are just tied to each other so rattle on themselves and the ties rattle between the skins.
Solution:- wrap round the cables with bubble wrap to stop any knocks, and fit some really cheap adhesive circular felt pads (off eBay for furniture) to stick on the metal behind the tie points further across the tailgate towards the o/s/r.
This was after months of having a go now and again re the boot floor, jack & tools, inner side and rear trims, parcel shelf, hatch struts, you name it !
I can now drive for pleasure !
