Quality vs Quantity. Samsung is the Kia of Smartphone manufacturers.

Samsung earned $8.3 billion in profit off 71 million units.

Apple earned $8.8 billion in profit off 31.2 million units.

Read your article again, $8.8bn last year, $6.9bn this year.

Doesn't matter, it's the balance sheets that count in business. Both are in the business of making money and the facts remain that Samsung are up and Apple are down.

A massive Global recession may have a small influence...

Anyway, so what? We have Macs and iPhones (one 4S, one 5) and seem to be surviving.

Exactly, the recession have made people more savvy with their money and what they spend it on. People are seeing Apple products as over priced and more style than substance, their margins on their products, as JacksClarks articles he posted, are proof of this. Thats not to say they're not good products, just that there are better alternatives for the money.

Okay, define "better?" Because I can't think of a fairly powerful smart phone that fits properly in a pocket that isn't an iPhone. Sure they aren't the most powerful but they are slim and do 99% of what people need.

In business, stuff just working properly is far more valuable than some 1% faster processor or whatever - my Android phones were hopeless within a year because just like PCs, they get full of bloatware.

It's not only Samsung that Apple need to be wary of, every week there's another Chinese manufacturer bringing out a new android phone, some are excellent quality and as the main market is China, the prices are very good value.

Latest one I'm looking at is the Faea F2, but there's THL, Oppo, Newman, Iocean and many more.

Apple are about to launch the Iphone 5s, this'll really pi55 off the owners who took out a 2 year contract last Sept as it was only way they could afford the latest model. So Apple now expect loyal owners to fork out £600 a year just to try to keep pace with the Android manufacturers. Little wonder they seem to be losing customers.

Can I just say I have an iPhone5 and it is great! I did look at Samsungs and things, but really.... toys in comparison! The iPhone does what I want it to do brilliantly and I suspect will still be dong it in 2 years time long after the screen would have cracked and the plastic case fractured on an 'equivalent' Android device!

What! Apple bring out less than one phone a year, now take a look at Samsung. Do you believe their phones are free.

Think how Samsung feel about it, pretty much working for nothing as they owe Apple a billion for copying them.

if apple kicked em out for falling behind and now apple have got there back because they are better than apples own chips, whats doe that say about apples hardware?

thanks for clarifying that apples hardware sucks

Are you saying Samsung's chips suck? Because that's what you'll find in iPhones.

"Better" is subjective and is different for each individual. The iPhone may be better for you, that's fine, but it does not necessarily mean that whilst it meets your specific needs it will meet the needs of others. There are so many factors and infinite variations of such factors generally ranging from brand, features, performance, value, price, functionality etc etc etc. The general consensus is that there is something "better" as represented by the greater number units of phones sold in the year for Samsung for example.

I must apologise for making a decision based on personal requirements, dismissing so many who may differ in their own needs.

Does it matter? The point is, there is a phone for everyone, not just an iPhone, and one that will meet the requirements of the buyer. Samsung gives you more than 3 choices, clearly the minuscule choice of phones that Apple do offer doesn't meet the buyers requirements which is why 71 million chose to buy Samsung for example.

What utter rowlocks, been using Android for 4 years and never had any issues with bloatware, maybe you need to be careful about what you install?

No doubt. Lots of outstanding features that you'll enjoy on Android in a couple of years. Of course you'll need to buy a new phone to get those new features.

I shunned the iPhone 5 with a background of iPhone use. But I shunned the iPhone 4 because of the 'just deal with it' line from Steve jobs on the signal loss issue.

The 5 is the worst I've seen on terms of finish. My workmate's one has lost most of the black finish round the edge, looks poorly finished to me. My 4S still looks great since launch.

Likewise you'll get to experience the outstanding features in IOS 7 that's already currently in Android, like tab view in Safari, flat aesthetic look of icons and other visual tweaks, a new unlock screen with multi-directional swip instead of the current horizontal unlock bar, a swipeable multi-tasker, a new menu buttons for quick and convenient access settings like airplane mode, wifi, bluetooth etc, and kill apps by swiping.

I know what you're thinking, that these features are hardly outstanding, but proof is in the pudding as Apple were 'inspired' enough to take these features already in Android and bring them to you through there forthcoming iOS update.
