+1 and @ poverty in OZ.

Get yourself over to India, then you'll know what poverty is.

Poverty in the UK does not exist.

That isn't the point. One can have dignity even if one is poor. In the UK we despise poor people, they are scum.

I really have no idea what some people on here are on about ie the UK is a bad place to be if you are poor or that the poor are demonised

Compare us to other developed countries like the USA, do they get as many benefits or limitless state funded NHS treatment? Up until recently virtually limitless free state funded legal representation?

The compare us to developing countries like India, you'll starve to death in a rat infested slum and the govt won't help.

The poor will also be ignored by the police and legal system.

In this country the 'working poor' are not demonised, I wouldn't talk to the guys who collect my rubbish or clean my windows with anything other than respect. In the developing world the middle class would abuse these people.

This is a country where people can make something of themselves. Just wait and see, these immigrants we all moan about will all be home owners and within 1-2 decades their children will be running the businesses and taking the skilled and professional jobs. And the indigenous population (that we see examples of here) will be moaning that you just can't catch a break in this country.

What about rich people, Tony? What do you think the prevailing attitude is towards that group (however you choose to define it) amongst those who are not members of that group themselves?

This from the guy who was saying he was getting the 'inadequates' to pay for his pension through BTL? It's quite clear how you feel towards those who are disempowered compared to you.

Ok, firstly I did not compare our poor to that of India, I have spent 6 months in India btw, I know what poor looks like

You and most of the posters are, and that in itself is interesting, and not surprising as I have said on many occasions we are on a race to the bottom in these matters

Utterly absurd to compare our poor to that of India, we are the 7 richest country in the world after all - "aim high" is my motto, but hey ho not much surprises me with the morons that post here

On demonising the poor, take this as an example

A few weeks ago some utter **** on here posted (so predictably) a link to a telegraph article that cited a government minister claiming that the new tests for incapacity benefit ment an immediate drop in claimants by a million or so

Whoop hooo everyone posted, just shows what a bunch of lazy scum they are,

Except the data was bollox, in fact so bollox, and repeating it a serious lie, that andrew dillnot, the head of the statistic agency actually wrote to the ministers concerned

http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-politics-22720007

http://www.statisticsauthority.gov.u...p-29052013.pdf

Do you use sh1te data to make decisions?

In fact Andrew Dillnot has written to the government another 3 times complaining of lieing and misrepresenting the statistics when talking about benefit etc

Why would they do that?

To compare us to India is plain daft. We are a developed country. The definition of poverty is a ratio of the average wage, it is not an absolute figure.

Hodgy, I generally agree with a lot of your posts however this is what you said

QUOTE HODGY

being poor in this country must be one of the worst experiences in the world

Now look at that statement again. To me it implies that being poor in this country is somehow worse than being poor in most of the rest of the world.

Do you really believe that? Or have I misunderstood you?

Sort of poetic licence Ding

Like for instance if I said "this S Class Mercedes is the worst car in the world"

Would you assume I was comparing it to a Honda Matiz or a BMW 7 series or Jaguar or equivalent

For further explanation see Paulr post above

The fact the most people choose to compare my comments to India etc (although a lot of those slum dwellers seem to have mobile phones??????)
Says more about them tbh

A bit thick

So be grateful you don't live in a cardboard box because that is really all you really are worth?

Given my circumstances, I'm happy with this country I live in. I'm a second generation "immigrant" and my parents came from a country with extreme poverty to the UK with literally just a suitcase of clothes and tiny amount of savings and worked their butts off to make a better life for themselves and eventually for me and my siblings. And they did so at a time when there was extreme prejudice and adversity towards immigrants.

I don't understand why people would say this country is a "sh!thole". Sure this country has it's problems, but all countries will have it's fair share of problems too. If you concentrate on the negatives of this country, well then, you're just as likely to whatever country you decide to live in once the honeymoon period is over and you have to work for a living. As pointed out already, there are many positive aspects to this country and plenty of opportunities, but like anywhere, don't expect it to be handed on a plate to you, if you put in the time and the effort the rewards are great as life is what you make of it. I for one am proud and privileged to be living in one of the most diverse and prosperous country in the world.

There is an awful lot of good in general in this country-nothing is perfect of course. IF the World was like that we would all be committing suicide. Got to have something to strive for to get the most satisfaction out of life.

You have to go over there and try it out of course.

That babbling fool TDW will be along in a moment to say how you and your parents are just self obsessed, self important, bourgeois, selfish, capitalist pigs.

How dare you strive to better yourself??
