If they are insisting you take the car back......drive the ****er

8-9 years ago I made the mistake of buying a escort cosworth from jct28
Gearbox started to **** itself as I came off the m18 home.....phoned up jct28 and he told me he wouldn't do anything until the car was returned
I drove it from donny back to derby with a massive hole through the box, oil everywhere and a car full of smoke.........his face was a picture
I did ok and took my Elise and cash back off him after telling him to shove a replacement gearbox up his ****

upset guys - it wouldn't be so bad if I didn't love the colour so much and they were so bloody rare - that's kinda holding me back - silly really

if you like the car the best thing to do is getting the engine rebuilt by a specialist and uprate the parts that people have mentioned above.

a repair with stock parts will fail again.

cheers - yes I think you are right - the key thing is first they question whether it is the head gasket after my local did the sniff text/pressure text and believe it to be the head - hence they are insisting they look at it. if it is the head gasket then maybe they should contribute towards cost of it and I get it done at specialist? but I know they will be reluctant to do that - otherwise full refund?

what cost are we loking at for trustworthy rebuild from someone like API? need to get an idea of how much it would cost me? its also clearly been modded which they said it was standard when I bought it but I get the feeling it has also been remapped etc - it was at scoobyclinic last year - worth contacting them?

Good idea, find out what has been done. Make sure you get a copy of the original advert for legal reasons, if they have sold it as unmodded and it's been tuned beyond what the engine is capable of (some of us would jokingly suggest the engine isn't capable of the standard 276bhp) then they've mislead you. You are still well within your rights to return it, as bulldog says you suffer sleepless nights if you don't.

The more you say the more I think you should drive it back and get your refund in full, you've been sold a lemon and it is only going to cause you more problems.

White UK STis are not rare, there are two that I posted early in this thread so have a look at getting one of those two. I would recommend forging any 2.5 build though and you should always budget for this problem if you don't want to. If you must have a white hawk and don't want to spend more on it then wait for a forged build to turn up or buy a JDM 2.0 car.

Stick to your guns, you're the one who has been wronged here, so don't let the garage try to imply it's any other situation.

A JDM Hawk 2.0 STi would be a very fine replacement for it, as has been said above.

I can only see two options here.

one.
return it and get a forged rebuild from a specialist with you just paying for the uprated parts the garage for the labour.

two.
get a refund.

anything else will be asking for trouble.

Previous owner told me it was running 400bhp and 400lb/ft so its been modded, But he was selling parts from the car that he had took off,
I bought a splitter from him which was white matching the car he part-ex'd,

He also had a full decat exhaust system(open neck downpipe etc) from what I could see, So might be worth looking what exhaust you have on your car, because if its running 400bhp with a full decat exhaust system and now it has all the cats and standard exhaust back on and its running the same map, then its not going to run right.

My local garage said it has a modded cat back system on it with 4" inch tailpipe , still on it but too loud and have purchsed racebox system to replace it but obviously not fitted yet. Mmm wonder if it is the same one? Mine also has front splitter on it

Ahhh, that's why it's blown up

A forged rebuild from is at least three grand to my knowledge, it is obviously dependant on options as you can go bells and whistles so to speak.

If you are absolutely set on keeping this car (not the wise option according to consensus) then you should contact APi, Finch and Alan Jeffrey for general quotes including assessment.

When you realise what kind of problem this is you'll want rid of that car and any kind of fix that doesn't involve a specialist engine builder.

+1,you might love the car now but you will soon hate it when the headgasket fails again without the forged build.

previous car owner of STI was Paul Bradbury in Notts - anyone know him. Really need to know what was done on the car.
