These days executives are getting paid 6 figure sums and very generous pensions arrangements for leaving after doing a bad job, or for keeping their mouths shut, or being paid huge bonuses when the company does well, but still being paid the same bonuses when doing badly.

This does go some way to perpetuating the divide between those in high places, staying there regardless of ability.

I don't remember this in the 80's and 90's, if you were bad you were let go.
Only if you believe what you read in the papers......and that's the problem!

has the rise in shareholder value matched and kept pace with the increase in executive remuneration in the last 15 years

I don't know, are all executives now being paid 6 figure sums, given generous pensions and massive bonuses for failures? and are you saying this never occurred 15 years ago?

Well, either it used to happen a LOT less often than it does now, or our investigative journalists are better today.

I think it's the former

I think this this has never changed, only more widely reported since the banking crisis.

well to frame the question - hence the answer, lets talk about senior Executives of Footsie 100 companies

Yes, they get paid 6 figure sums. Yes they are given generous pensions and massive bonuses

and NO the share price performance has not matched the remuneration

but not just the private sector - from todays BBC

http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/entertainment-arts-23125494

"The BBC has been criticised by the National Audit Office for paying out £25m in severance to 150 senior BBC managers, and risking "public trust".

Hodgy, you're still confusing symptom with cause IMO.

So, what's changed in the past 15 years?

i don't think i am confusing anything

I made a point in post 36; nothing since posted has made me change my view
you can argue the toss about top execs pay (in the private and public sectors), it is a slight irrelevance tbh, and I have argued against any form of pay capping in this forum before

my central point is that things are going to get a lot worse for a lot of people, but a few – the top 10% will do disproportionality better

and one reason – as I pointed out a few years ago in a post - is that the lower income earners will spend an ever greater proportion of their income on the basics – rent, food and energy (heating and fuel)

and I have been reasonably careful not to put a “value” judgement against this analysis – it is just how it is

As for poverty I am in Indonesia right now where the true meaning of poverty can be seen daily yet also they have a work ethic way in advance of anything the average native UK workshy scum would recognise as such!!
It's not a "blame" thread. It was more of an observation. Not even saying its wrong. All I'd say is for people to be aware of it, much more than it used to be.
